Many thanks. I'll try the video test (I'm assuming you mean watch it on my laptop). I am mainly wondering, though, how it will look on TV, as that's where it will end up being viewed.
I suppose the way I am thinking is that for an hour and a half film, rendered down to DVD, the compression process will lose enough quality for the difference ...

I've got a Canon HG20 which allows me to upload footage, originally shot in both 24 mbps and 17 mbps, at 1080i or 567i. I'm going to start a project which is will be outputted for standard, non-HD DVD. Will there be any difference in the final quality if I upload it in 567i as opposed to the bigger 1080i. I'm trying at the minute, and find S12 somewhat frustrating, as it won;t see the camera's HDD, and when the files are imported, using the canon software (which is poor), I can;t batch import it.
