I dont have the capacity to update drives now so I have to have the best solution for what I already have.
Does this sound right..
C drive 300gb 15k - O/s + liquid
2nd drive 300gb 15k - Render/media files/capture
External Esata 1Tb 7.2k - Back up media/back up projects
OR
C drive 300gb 15k - O/s + ...

I have a direct x 10 card and my system has direct x 9c installed. If I install the direct x 10 patch for AL7.2 do I first have to install direct x10 on my system(which is XP 32bit) and then install the patch or is this already in the patch?

I thought the graphics card did most of the rendering, for at least GPU effects.

We have 2 gigs of ram now. It sounds like we can gain a render speed advantage by increasing the ram to 4 gigs and following your advice to allow the system to enable large memory. But does our video card (1.5Gs) come out of the 4gig equation.
