With my Sony HC1, outputting in the HDV standard, the resolution was 1440x1080, it is NOT 720 .
In Pinnacle the HDV setting is 1440x1080.
Now I upgraded to a Canon HG21, for $700.00 from B+H, after selling my HC1 on Ebay for $650.00. The PQ of the
HG21 so soo much better in resolution , better low light and ...

Waste of money!. Using red laser DL DVD blanks, you can put over an hour of 1920x1080 17Mb AVCHD on them and they work fine in Blu ray players.

Is makin a BR DVD using AVCHD finally working, I mean Not degrading the PQ when using AVCHDas the source, like from a Canon HG21? And can I save to file in AVCHD? And is there no forced re-encoding?

I just did a 2 min test DVD, via V12.1. Started as HG21 video at 17Mb, then converted to MPEG2 at 30Mb 1920x1080, then burned as a AVCHD DVD. Looked excellent on my Sony BR player. Data rate was only 15Mb max P V12 claims it to be 17Mb. As I said looked very good . W/O that MPEG2 step it would look like garbage.
Wish that work ...

Since the last few days I am the happy owner of a Canon HG21 ($700.00 from B+H) It produces significantly better video than my former
Sony HC1. Part can be explained that the HC1 is only 1440x1080, yet when burned to BR AVCHD, the HC1 HDV video looked pretty close to
the original HDV tape from the HC1.
However the output from the HG21 looks ...

Well a bit rate of 24Mbits is less compression than 17 assuming the same video, so 24 should be less demanding.
Bought a Canon HG21 today, it goes up to 24 so I will find out. Price from B+H was$700, what a bargain!!

Thanks for the reply and the info. WOW that would be a trip of a lifetime
Does your pc render or convert files at 24 Mbit faster than 17 or is there no difference in editing operation, Not PQ quality.
Ideally 24 Mbit is not as much compressed and should need less PC horsepower? I am using V12

I am contemplating the purchase of a new camcorder, having sold my trusty Sony HC1. It must have an EVF, thus extremely limiting the field, so the HG21 is a candidate, selling for $700 at B+H. Or the
Panasonic 3CCD TM300 for $1200. I am nervous about getting a hard drive camera, just trying to get away from spining ...

I burn the HD2 output of my HC1, after editing in V12, to BR w/o any problems. Quality is excellent. Gene
