Thanks Lew. After trying as many things as possible, I managed to get round this problem by converting the clips to mpg2 files, then importing into Liquid. I'll have to look at what other solutions are possible for the future when using AVCHD, and re-read the posts you point out.

The files are showing as 16bit, and when exporting files are not empty but again no sound. Like you say, the files are corrupt, but just a bit strange that Liquid can play them. 

I have converted some AVCHD clips to avi using AVCHD Transcoder v21. I can Import them to Liquid and edit on the timeline (along with captured DV clips). I have just had a look at feature comparison between Home Premium E, Professional E, & Ultimate E. And from that I would rule out Ultimate, and does not seem anything extra in Professional that I would use, so I would go for Home Premium for £50 (note all editions can be upgraded later - at a price).
