I should clarify that my use of the MB DV is for comp preview.  I have not used it for any other purpose with After Effects.  Sorry, but I have never tried Media Composer and cannot comment on th MB DV use with it.  I trust that someone will answer as this forum is full of people with knowledge and a willingness to share.  ...

For what it is worth...... The MovieBox DV works fine with After Effects. For me, that alone is worth having one.
