I once had to redo a video using the VOB files from the DVD.  The project seemed to go smoothly.  As I recall, I just had to rename the files as mpg.  Why not give it a try?

If I may add: To further check out the program, I put a video on the timeline and attempted to make a title for it.  The titler ain't working either.  Sound effects can be added and the music generator works.  Those things are available in both S9 and Liquid.  A bit of frustration is taking place here.
