In closer reading, I realize now that the free upgrade to MC 5 is just the editing software, not the whole suite. So I'm a little on the fence again, because it is really all the add-ins that are more important to upgrade than the primary editing software, in my opinion. The free future upgrade from MC 4 to MC 5 cinches the deal for me. I'm less worried that I'll need to shell out a big chunk more money soon after making the switch.

What would really help at this point is if people experienced in both LE and MC could start writing a ''How to do it in LE'' / ''How to do it in MC'' translation chart.
We could get a feel for what is similar vs. what is different.

If they will issue new codecs for free for older versions that would probably keep me happy; but new video formats are typically a convenient leverage to force users to upgrade, and so upgrade price can be a real issue.

I think the conversion deal from LE to MC is a great price. But do we know what we are getting into financially? If MC is oriented toward larger production houses, will we be able to afford the upgrades? Does anyone have an estimate of the long-term cost of ownership of MC vs other NLEs?

I personally think Avid should sell the source code for Liquid Edition to Smetvid for $1.00 with a non-compete agreement that he only sells to existing licenced LE users for 5 years; after that he can put it on the market any way he wants.
Who knows, maybe LE diehards could live on and enjoy their favorite interface for years to ...
