It might have something to do with the fact that they are rewritable as opposed to burn once. I'm not sure and a simple internet search could answer that.

Drawing a line around the subject is how it's usually done. Once you have drawn around your subject then you choose it as your selection. You can then copy and paste it where ever you want. You're going to have to fine tune your selection then there are several different ways to remove the unwanted background. It would probably be better if you watched a youtube step by step tutorial rather than get piece by piece suggestions here. I've learned quite a bit watching youtube tutorials. Most drive manufacturers have drive test software. It may, or may not be good. And it's probably a good idea to always update firmware. That Seagate drive that was clicking and making humming noises and occasionally hanging up when I tried to access it is working perfectly fine now and hasn't made a peep since I updated the firmware.

I have 3 of the newer low profile Seagate 1 terabyte drives and an older Barracuda drive that was clicking, making noise and hanging up my system.
