Pinnacle Studio 25 Plus no video in preview nor timeline

Hello Pinnacle Studio Forum, I need your help.

I purchased a brand-new high-performance laptop (MSI Creator 17), upgraded it to Windows 11, and purchased/installed Pinnacle Studio 25 Plus. But I’ve run into a problem. In the Studio edit screen, when attempting to preview a clip from the library, it will play the audio but only shows a single frame of the video. Using the timeline, it also plays the audio, but displays a black screen for video. I tried both the sample movie and my own recordings with same failure.

In troubleshooting, I updated all the drivers (updated Nvidia GeForce drivers multiple times), reset/reinstalled PS25 half-dozen times. Tried running PS25 as standard user and as an administrator. I had technical support case open with Coral and another with computer manufacture MSI, but so far, nothing they suggested has solved the problem.

Interestingly… Twice, after reinstalling PS25, it played the sample movie with sound AND video. But after restarting or logging out/in the video again went missing. Appreciate any suggestions.

I read that there are other users are having similar, but none of their solutions so far has worked for my problem.

    Thank you
    --- George Schmidt

What's the spec of the laptop? Many laptops with high.  perfomance cards still have the onoboard graphics installed (mine has a both a 2070 and an intel HD 630). Have you updated the second GPU's drivers? It could be that PS is using that for display.

Re: Pinnacle Studio 25 Plus no video in preview nor timeline

    Thanks for the response.

Systems specification listed below. Yes, my laptop has Intel and Nvidia graphics, and I'm puzzled how that works. Also I found that I see the video in full screen mode, but not in the little edit screen. And... last week I upgraded the Intel graphics driver and PS25 worked. I rejoiced and even started editing a movie. Then Boom the problem retuned! I find this behavior very strange. If I had a hardware or driver problem then PS25 should work or not work period. But instead it seem to work for a while, then stop.

     Thanks again for any suggestions.

Re: Pinnacle Studio 25 Plus no video in preview nor timeline

Interesting. My laptop and desktop are similar but less powerful than yours in setup and I can see that Win 11 is using the Intel card for the small preview on my laptop, which doesn't happen in W10 on my desktop.

I tried Full screen and when I returned the PS IU was messed up, with a background that said Speed FX. After that there was a Windows update and that stopped hapening.

I'll do some more digging .

Re: Pinnacle Studio 25 Plus no video in preview nor timeline

George, how is hardware acceleration set up in your PS25 ?

Re: Pinnacle Studio 25 Plus no video in preview nor timeline

    Thanks for the question.

Hardware acceleration is set to CUDA and Auto Detect. I tried changing it to Intel and tried again with "None". Doesn't make a difference, as if acceleration isn't working. My gut feeling is the root cause is in my graphics setup. The Nvidia driver has two modes; Games/Content, tried them both, but no difference.

Please keep the suggestions and questions coming.

    --- George

Re: Pinnacle Studio 25 Plus no video in preview nor timeline

    Hello Forum,
My problem with PS25 is finally solved. Properly set Nvidia GPU default for Studio, and properly configure Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling.
I had support cases open with Corel, MSI, Microsoft and Nvidia. It was the engineer from Nvidia that got the fix.
Thanks for your input and questions.

Thanks George. Sounds like this might be my issue to. Where would I find these settings?

Re: Pinnacle Studio 25 Plus no video in preview nor timeline

    1. open Windows setup panel
    2. System
    3. Display
    4. at the bottom of the Display page click Graphics settings
    5. in the new windows click Browse and locate NGStudio.exe
    6. then Options
    7. in the popin select the Nvidia GPU
By default, Windows will always use the graphics card that has the lowest energy consumption

Re: Pinnacle Studio 25 Plus no video in preview nor timeline

    Thanks Yann.

On my Windows 10 desktop with Intel and nVidia GPUs PS25 uses the nVidia 1070 for playback even in the small preview window. I've not changed the setting manually myself, so has something else overwritten it? It is currently set to Let Windows decide, although the power saving option is marked as the intel HD 4600. So I wonder why Windows using the 1070? Or is the decision dependent on some information the program itself provides at the time of instalation?

My understanding : if the application does not apply its own rules, Windows applies its rules. According to the option selected in this popin, you let him make the choice of you force him to use a specific graphics card.

I don't know how Windows decides which car is less energy consuming. Smart choice based on some calculations or something that Microsoft has determined in advance, I don't know ?

In my opinion, even if Windows knows that it must use a specific card, the application should always have the priority to use another one.

Re: Pinnacle Studio 25 Plus no video in preview nor timeline

So could it be that PS25 has told my W10 machine to use the high performance card, but it looks like it didn't tell W11 to use my best GPU? All tha games on the W11 laptop are set the use the 2070.

Re: Pinnacle Studio 25 Plus no video in preview nor timeline

Below are the instructions I received from the Nvidia support engineer.

I applied the instructions to accelerate these executables:
    C:\Program Files\Pinnacle\Studio 25\programs\Pinnacle Studio.exe
    C:\Program Files\Pinnacle\Studio 25\programs\RenderService.exe
    C:\Program Files\Pinnacle\Studio 25\programs\MultiCam\MultiCamService.exe
    C:\Program Files\Pinnacle\Studio 25\programs\MultiCam\RenderService.exe
    And C:\Program Files\Pinnacle\Studio 25\programs\NGStudio.exe"

    -------- Instructions from Nvidia ----------
Kindly follow the steps in this link to make nvidia gpu default

and then Once done, Please enable the hardware-accelerated GPU Scheduling. This new feature can potentially improve performance and reduce latency by allowing the video card to directly manage its own memory, To enable this:
    1.    Open settings and click/tap on the System icon.
    2.    Click/tap on Display on the left side and click/tap on the Graphics settings link on the right side.
    3.    Click/tap on the Change default graphics settings link under Default settings at the top.
    4.    Turn on or off (default) Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling for what you want.

    5.    Restart the computer to apply.

BTW - I also asked Corel Support which Pinnacle executables I should accelerate to obtain best video performance. Haven't yet heard back from them.

    Regards

    --- George

Question.  I decided to follow this advice (just purchased 25U) and when I select NGStudio.exe I get a pop up message "This app can't run on your PC.  To find a version on your PC check with software publisher."   I have no issues running Studio 25U from desktop icon.  I have other versions installed and then all run when I manually click on NGStudio.exe when in appropriate folder.

     Any ideas.

    Thanks.

So why would you bother tweaking the setup of your graphics card ?

I suggest you to touch nothing.   Wink
