Editing Issues After Recent Update
Hello everyone, First post here. I am relatively new to
video shooting/editing as I had been dealing with stills primarily in the
past. I have purchased Pinnacle Studio Ultimate
24 earlier this year and have successfully completed one video project. It
seems all was fine until the most recent update (24.1.0.260). When I try to edit my new project, having
updated Pinnacle Studio to the latest version, I come across several issues.
Bit of background first: ·
Majority of
the project are 1920x1080 119,88 fps video clips from my Nikon D780 that I
intend to slow down through time remapping to 20% - 23,976 fps. ·
My timeline
setting are also HD 1920x1080 @ 23,976 fps. ·
There are also
some 1920x1080 23,976 fps clips that I simply drag and drop onto the timeline.
No issues here. When editing, it seems that slowing down
and/or colour grading some clips is breaking them, in a sense that they are no
longer smooth in the preview and after export. It is almost as if there are
frames missing and, as a result, I get this very distorted video in the end. Looks
similar to trying to slow down 23,976 fps clip to 10% or 20% on a 23,976 fps
timeline. This only happens to some clips and not to
others - seems to be random in my opinion. Also rendering/preview is painfully slow – a lot
slower than prior to the software update. I do not believe I am doing anything different
to the way I edited my first video project (other than the fact that I am using
a lot more 119,88 fps clips vs. 23,976 fps clips this
time). Again, none of the above issues were noticeable prior to the update. I tried reinstalling Pinnacle
Studio but that did not help. Not sure if there is a way to go back to the
older version – the installer seems to be downloading and installing the latest
version when I run it. Any ideas would be much appreciated
folks, thanks.

Hi DSLR_Shooter, Welcome to the forum. Because you believe your issue is related to the 24.1.0.260 update, I would suggest you contact Corel Support directly to address your issue.

Re: Editing Issues After Recent Update
Hi DSLR_Shooter, In terms of the slow preview render. I can confirm that the system has slowed down as compared to previous versions. I took a 4k clip which was a minute long and timed how long it would take to preview render (brown line turn to green) in PS24. It took 3 min 20 seconds. I did the same thing in PS23. It took less than a minute for the same clip!

Re: Editing Issues After Recent Update
@Candive, what were your settings? I used Optimization 90, Hardware Accel AMD. I used a 16 second UHD 4K 50P 150mb/s 4:2:0 clip shot with a Panasonic G9. I made sure that all rendered files were deleted in the Storage Location for both versions.
With PS24, it took 1:06 to render completely on the timeline. CPU usage was around 15%. With the timeline 1280x720, it took 1:05 and CPU usage dropped to 11%.
With PS23, it too 22 seconds and CPU usage was 46%. With timeline 1280x720, 13 seconds and 60% CPU usage.
There is something wrong with the performance with PS24. Painfully slow. I don't know what to say.

Re: Editing Issues After Recent Update
Seems like corel should release a patch to roll back the last patch, until they figure out what they did.

Re: Editing Issues After Recent Update
Hi Tony, I used optimization 5%, Hardware Accel Intel. I also deleted all rendered files before moving the clip to the track
Although we have different spec machines we both have similar results; your 66/22 or my 200/60 = PS24 is about 3 times slower than PS23.

Re: Editing Issues After Recent Update
exactly what I too have come up with... it seems that there is a 3x slow down in timeline rendering. Something that is not acceptable.

Re: Editing Issues After Recent Update
Would you both agree that ps24 before the latest patch was at least as fast as your ps23 results?

Re: Editing Issues After Recent Update
Honestly can't say if before the patch PS24 was like this. I have the release installation files, but am not about to do the uninstall/reinstall thing. This needs to be fixed.

Re: Editing Issues After Recent Update
Candive / Tony - thanks for sharing your
test results. Good to know that this is a wider issue rather than an isolated
case. We are trying several things with Corel
support, none of them seem to work just yet. I could live with slow (although it is not
acceptable). However, the choppy video after edit is a dealbreaker for
me. See below a WeTransfer link to a short video I exported that highlights exactly what I
mean. The only thing I did to edit was time remapping to 20% and reducing
exposure to -15 from 0. I also cut the clip slightly to make the size smaller. There
is also the strange sound at the start of the video. https://we.tl/t-1tAcXC6J7j

I'll run some tests here as well, as I'm seeing something similar on the desktop (I think), but not sure I'm seeing it on the laptop

Love the depth of field you created in the video but no, that is not a good result.

Re: Editing Issues After Recent Update
OUCH! My ears hurt! As for the choppiness, what frame rate was the video captured? Have you deleted the rendered files and re-rendered? What were your export settings? Is it possible to create a package of that project part?

Re: Editing Issues After Recent Update
The original video clip was captured at 120 fps and the timeline is 24 fps. If by deleting the rendered files you mean deleting them from the timeline and then adding them back in and re-rendering then no, I did not do it at the time. I just tried it now though and the problem is still there. On the package question - I am not sure. How would you do that and what purpose does it serve? My export settings were as follows: Thanks

See my export settings below: - I tick the "Same as Timeline" box - Format H.264/AVC; size 1920 x 1080; interlacing: progressive; frames per second: 24; peak bitrate: 143 MBit/s - Audio sample rate: 48 kHz; channels: stereo; SampleSize: 16 Bit; Bitrate 112 Thanks

Re: Editing Issues After Recent Update
The reason for the package is to either confirm or deny the situation.
But I understand if you do not want to do it.

Re: Editing Issues After Recent Update
OK, I have not done it before so is my understanding correct that I should do the following: 1. Save the movie as package. 2. Close and re-open Pinnacle Studio. 3. Open the package, export again and see if the problem remains?

Re: Editing Issues After Recent Update
That package would be available for others to try on their computer. If it's a "global" issue and not a "local" one, maybe a moderator here in the forum and escalate this. And if there is a package to pass on for them to replicate the problem, maybe, hopefully, fingers crossed, etc., something will be done about it.

Re: Editing Issues After Recent Update
Forgive me if I am repeating myself. I have a lot on my "plate" at the moment... The saved project file was choppy during playback in addition to the screech sound with I would stop and start play. I have a few questions, and please correct me if I am wrong. The frame rate is 120fps. Correct? You are placing it on a 24P timeline. So far, after the timeline renders, it plays back correctly. Next, I did a Time Remap to 20% and extended it up to where it turns "pink". After rendering on the timeline, playback isn't smooth. What I did next was File>New Movie, dragged the clip to the timeline which gave me a 59.94fps on the timeline. Clip renders on the timeline and plays back smoothly. Next, I did a Time Remap of 20% extending it to where it turns "pink". Fast timeline render and immediate smooth playback. Outside of that scratch sound (the track can be muted), smooth playback. Next, Color>Basic>Preset>Vivid just to choose something quickly. After the timeline render, clip plays back smooth. Question, why are you using 24P timeline settings? Is it necessary? What is the final result you are looking for?

Re: Editing Issues After Recent Update
No worries Tony, let me explain. Bear in mind I am a newbie so perhaps
there is something I am missing but my understanding is that 24 fps is the
standard frame rate you see in movies. For news broadcasts it is typically 30
fps. Anything higher than that looks unnatural and you would only shoot in say
60 fps or 120 fps if you want to slow it down later when you edit. So, I was trying to add slow motion clips
to my 24 fps video. The final result I am looking for is to have a 24 fps video
that includes both 24 fps clips (real-time, so to speak), as well as slow
motion clips (120 fps slowed down through Time Remap to 20%, i.e. 24
fps). Does that make sense? This is what I
did with my previous project and all worked fine.

Re: Editing Issues After Recent Update
Where is you video going to be played? A lot of people talk about 24fps, but do not understand the reason why film was shot at that frame rate. Are they shooting with the 180 degree rule?
Many talk about "cinematic", but do not even know what that means. These are buzz words tossed around like LUT's, "color grading" vs "color correcting" trying to mimic what professionals do. Heck, if you look at my "old" videos shot with a Canon HF10 1080i, you would say "cinematic". Organic "grain" and Canon's color science back then, produces a "look". Today, comparing it to my 4K and 1080 50/25 footage, it looks "dated". Lots of information about "cinematic look" out there. And if you read a lot of it, many don't agree on "how" giving personal opinions. Don't get caught up with the "hype".
There is a lot that can be done by anyone to achieve a "cinematic" look. Adding "grain", softening the image slightly (using old lenses) and choosing the right color grade/LUT for the video. Slowing a video down, well, gives you a slow video. Move slower in your shoot.
I have not been able to get your footage to play back smoothly in a 23.976 frame rate. I would suggest taking your 120 clip, work on the timeline it plays back on, do your corrections and adjustments and export the file.
