video intermittently blacking out on the timeline

Playing the timeline as I edit, and the video intermittently goes fully black. If I stop and pull the "read head"  to where it showed nothing,  video usually starts showing, but not always.

Not sure where the fault lies -- but the source video I'm editing comes from a Cell phone. The video was shot at 4k  (3840 x 2160) at approx 16fps; 61360 KBit per second.   Clearly formatting on the fly might be the cause ...

    Any other possibilities ??

    (PS19.5 -- Intel MB, w/ Ivy Bridge 4000 graphics)

Is it constant frame rate or variable frame rate?  If it is variable frame rate, try running it through handbrake and converting it to constant frame rate, then load it into PS.

    likely that's true --

I'll see if Handbrake fixes the issue

    thanks

You can use Mediainfo then click on view/tree and then scroll down to video to check the file framerate .  A lot of security cameras and cell phones use it to save file space, but it is next to impossible to edit on a timeline because the timeline has to be a fixed frame rate to do non-linear editing.

Re: video intermittently blacking out on the timeline

yes, your hunch is correct -- the interior stuff got recorded at 16.742 FPS; whilst the daylight exteriors were recorded at between 17.583 & 28.937 FPS

Thankfully my 1080 export went ok -- even without converting with Handbrake.

I have to add some titles and text -- hopefully the next export will be similarly successful ...

Those sound like average or peak frame rates, not constant.  If you don't trim the clip, some of the time it will work.  If you trim it and get the black frames or grey screen with circle arrow frames, sometimes you can just move the in or out point(frame) 1 or 2 frames either direction and it will work again.

Re: video intermittently blacking out on the timeline

I had to edit a few webinars for a company. Remove dead air, "Uh...mmmm.... err.....", etc. I would sometimes get the gray circle with some of the edits. What I did was only add a "split clip" (using the 'N' keyboard shortcut), to another part of the clip before the gray circle.

Re: video intermittently blacking out on the timeline

FYI - There was also an issue reported by some PS19.5.1 users where black frames would appear in the preview - there was a hotfix released (a ZIP file containing some contents of Studio 19 program directories). I can't find the original Corel knowledge base article, but there's a post in these forums here and also a page on the Déclic Vidéo site here

Unfortunately the link to the ZIP file appears to be dead Sad

Read this post (in French) : http://forums.pinnaclesys.com/forums/thread/724225.aspx

3rd bullet there is the link to the .zip file which contains the directories and files that must be replaced.

If you need some help to translate my instructions in English, just ask.

I've already announced that I've been keeping a trace of all the patches of Studio since Avid Studio here : http://forums.pinnaclesys.com/forums/thread/722071.aspx
