    Bit confused on Export options

OK maybe a dumb question but now I've confused myself.  so I thought I had it figured out that MPEG-4 Visual is the more common standard and now I'm a bit confused because the AVC/H.264 also end up as .mp4 files.  So what is considered the "right" .mp4 video file to use for the best quality with compression?  I tried googling and that just led me questioning more.  If both are H.264 and both end up as .mp4 files than what's the difference?

    Re:Bit confused on Export options

Mpeg4 is a standard. This standard is divided into parts. Each part defines a specific object.

Part 2 defines a video compression format. The other name of Mpeg4-part 2 is Mpeg4 Visual. Famous codecs who implemented this compression format were DivX and Xvid.

Part 10 defines another and more recent video compression format. The other names of this format is H.264 or AVC (Advanced Video Coding)

Part 14 defines a file format, a container. Its name is mp4

Part10 video compression format is much more efficient and powerful than Part2. It is also more suitable for HD and UHD.

Pinnacle is using the words H264/AVC vs Mpeg4-Visual (among several other codecs) when export is based on Format and is using the words *.mp4 (among several other container extensions) + H264/AVC vs Mpeg4-Visual when export is based on Extension.

Re: Bit confused on Export options

I've been using H267/AVC always.  I've had problems with 'Visual' exporting.

If you are worried about "compression", change the Peak Bitrate to what the bitrate is in the video you are editing.

For sure "Nobody" is using 7.  Ha ha

One of the two plays from the beginning when streamed online, and the other has to fully download before it starts playing.  Not in front of my computer to check which one does which.  I'm sure someone can chime in.

Ok so to simplify if making a video for YouTube would AVC or MPEG-4 Visual be the proper setting.  I see YouTube now says it accepts h.265 so thats cool however now trying to make first h.265 video in pinnacle it freezes which isn’t good (now testing in another editor to make sure it’s only a pinnacle problem but so far looks like it).

You haven't listed your hardware and operating system.  Make sure you have the Microsoft HEVC code installed.  Make sure you have at least 48gigs of virtual memory setup.

    Oh system specs

    win10 64

    ryzen 7 3800x, 38gb ram, RTX 2060s, 1TB SSD pci4.0, 1TB SSD SATA

HEVC from Microsoft is installed.  So if HEVC doesn’t work then is the AVC/H.264 the best option for YouTube?

I d say it doesn't matter since YouTube will transcode it anyways using their own compression problem format.

But using H.264 allows you to divide by two the bitrate used for an equivalent visual result.  The files get quicker to upload.

Re: Re:Bit confused on Export options

HEVC no problem with my computer specs below.

I upload to Youtube all the time and am satisfied with the results using H264/AVC for the most part. Of course, Youtube compresses the video, but even 4K looks ok on a 4K computer monitor.

Odd I was able to do hevc in videostudio but pinnacle has frozen once at 11% and then next try at 24%.  Wonder what’s going on here.

I just tested and here is a screen shot of it working on my computer. I did nothing special with virtual memory. The test video was various clips for a total length of 2:10

You didn't say how long your project was and what video you were using.

I was able also to export HEVC with VideoStudio Pro 2020.

Re: Re:Bit confused on Export options

With the current memory leak issue with the amd hardware acceleration, it takes about 41gigs to export a 13 minute 4k hevc video with 4k hevc clips.  When it runs out of memory,  it hangs in random places like the op says.  My 13 minute project wouldn't export until I increased virtual memory to 48gigs.  Physical memory doesn't seem to help.  Something to do with windows 10 caching files in virtual memory.

Supposedly Intel export doesn't have the leak, maybe only minor, but no Cuda users have reported testing it.

Hmm well my video is somewhere around 10-15min so I’ll check the virtual memory.  Is this leak a windows issue or pinnacle issue?  I’m assuming pinnacle since it works with video studio?

Why would you bother with H.265 if it's for Youtube ?

My understanding is that they are working on it.  Not sure why files are being left open or cached after use during export.

Maybe for smaller file size and upload size/time?

I'm just excited that someone else in the world is using h.265/hevc besides me.  You made me feel like I was all alone in the world when you said nobody uses it.  I cried for days....  ha ha

So, to be able to upload twice faster, get ready to spend days to export !
