Uninstalling PS16, 17, and 18
Any risk of losing plug-ins or required files for PS21, PS23 and PS24 by uninstalling PS16, PS17 and PS18? PS23 & PS24 seems to open the old files with no problem. I think I have converted all my stx files from previous PS. If not, does PS24 still import stx files?

Re:Uninstalling PS16, 17, and 18
In principle, no risks. PS24 can import old stx projects, thanks to the dedicated feature in the File menu. But things, like transitions or some effects may be lost or badly transformed.

PS, I'm currently exporting in PS24, so I couldn't check the File menu.

Until you are very happy with the performance and stability of PS24 and are comfortable using it, I'd leave PS21 installed. Me personally, I never uninstall a previous version until I am happy with the current version.

Yes, uninstalling a version "only saves" 2 or 3 GBs. GBs cost nothing nowadays.

Re: Re:Uninstalling PS16, 17, and 18
I was looking to Uninstall them, 1. Because I no longer use them, 2. Because it makes backing up my drive c to my Nas take longer. Yes, I probably won't Uninstall ps21.5 for a while. It's my fall back when all else fails. Ps23 was getting pretty solid near the end.

Re: Re:Uninstalling PS16, 17, and 18
FWIW, there are some plugin files you may lose (in particular the ability to auto-migrate them from the earlier version) if you needed to completely remove and reinstall PS24... - Red Giant Filmmakers/Moton Graphics Toolkits - from PS16/PS17 Ultimate
- NewBlue effects (Video Essentials I - VII) - from PS23 Ultimate
If you uninstall the older versions, to keep using effects that were already migrated into PS24, make a backup of the plugins' folders so you can replace them if you ever need to clean-reinstall PS24. Regards, Richard

That's exactly what I was worried about. Thanks for clarifying that.

i understand, so i will keep working on both versions because I am under impression that version 21 render faster but editing on time line on version 24 is cooler !

Re: Re:Uninstalling PS16, 17, and 18
I always make a backup copy of C:\Program Files\Pinnacle\Studio 24\plugins folder. I also have fx that use the RTFX folder and RTFXV2 folder. Makes putting things back so much easier.

Hello Richard, The only way most of the RedGiant Plugins from PS17 would work for me in PS21 was only when PS17 and PS19 (64bit) we’re installed. For whatever the reason my experience had never been as you and Yann stated. Just to hear it again, do you believe with ONLY PS21 installed and I copy in the RG Plugins where they belong of course, would you expect some/most to work. Do you have such a configuration with ONLY PS21 or newer installed and most (any) RG Plugins you simply copied in works? Tnx,

Re: Re:Uninstalling PS16, 17, and 18
I wish there was a straight answer. All this is making me agree with Yann, it's only a couple gigs, leave it alone. For now I'm just going to remove the icons from the desktop and try to forget about them taking up space. Ha ha...

If the set of RG plugins you kept were from a working 64-bit installation of Studio (where those plugins had been migrated from PS17 Ultimate and the 64-bit to 32-bit "bridges" added at install-time) - the copied set of plugins ought to work without needing to keep the whole of PS17 installed (I can think of quite a few forum users who use this method...). FWIW I have never needed to manually copy the RG plugin files; for me the automatic migration at install-time has always been 100% reliable. Regards, Richard

Re: Re:Uninstalling PS16, 17, and 18
My concern would be, does the automatic migration on a new version install find the plugins in the previous version(s) file directories, or from entries in the registry?

Re: Re:Uninstalling PS16, 17, and 18
Guys, Edit: Richard: what actions were you suggesting when you stated “.... and the 64 to 32 bit bridges WERE ADDED” ? Or are you inferring actions that occur automatically by having 17 installed followed by installation of 19 (64 bit) that I did have for the migration after which I copied RG Plugins from 19 in 21. Funny, how I was resigned to not caring about not having RG since recently I had to totally clean all PS out then reinstall PS 21.5 to resolve a problem that Yann was following. And now I think .. let’s have fun. 1. Yes, my RG Plugin set are 64 bit from PS17, PS19 migration on to PS21.5. 2. I will never reinstall 17 and 19 again. 3. I admit 21.5 was always installed when I back installed 17 followed by 19. 4. I doubt that my RG Plugins will work but it’s an easy test to just copy them in to my super clean 21.5 that is rock solid in every way. I’ll report if any RG effects work. Thanks guys.

Re: Re:Uninstalling PS16, 17, and 18
The "bridges" are installed automatically by the later 64-bit version of Studio when its installer detects that PS17 Ultimate and the Red Giant plugins are present What appears to happen at install-time: - The Red Giant plugin folders (+ subfolders containing help files) are copied from PS17U's RTFXV2 folder tree to the copy of Studio being installed
- The original (32 bit) Red Giant plugin file is renamed by adding "32" to the file name
- The "bridge" .fex file is added - and has the file name that belonged to the original Red Giant .fex file. (You will notice that the "bridge" files are all the same size (may be 59kb, 66kb, 82kb or 109kb depending on the Studio version - the contents are different; a digital signature + coding to tie it to its "companion" 32 bit plugin file)
See the attached screen-grab for an example of RG plugins automatically migrated into Studio 24 Ultimate
Having done the migration once, and with a working set of RG plugin files in the 64-bit version of Studio, it is possible take a backup of those files and then uninstall PS17. The main program + content packs can be uninstalled, but do not uninstall either "Red Giant Filmmakers Toolkit" or "Red Giant Motion Graphics Toolkit" (doing so may remove some files and settings that are still needed to use the plugins in the 64 bit version of Studio) HTH Richard

Re: Re:Uninstalling PS16, 17, and 18
Richard, Thanks much for taking the time for the detail. I have seen everything that you state and have the entire bridged RG Plugins that migrated to PS21.5 zipped so I could again lay them in to the folder. I'll see them listed but will they work “That is the Question” to be answered. My experience from multiple tests in my W10 VM which is only used as a test bed (with native W7 my operating environment) was as soon as I renamed PS17 or PS 19, the RG Plugins that had worked in PS21.5, did NOT. I’ll get back with results in W7 as stated above. Tnx and in all fairness need to also thank Yann as he explained the process awhile ago when i ran all those tests.

Re: Re:Uninstalling PS16, 17, and 18
No change for me. RG bridged does not work ... and for me I know I need 17 and 19 installed ... and then not all of the RG Plugins ran in 21. Tnx for sharing
