    High CPU usage

    Hi.

After installing windows 10 version 2004 I have noticed an awkward issue. I do not see that it is making any bigger problem, but still.

When starting PS23.2.1.267 (64-Bit) and looking in Task Manager "System" has a cpu usage of abut 30-35% and when I shut down PS it goes down to normal around 1%.

If it came after upgrading to Win10 2004 or was there before, I do not recall, but I think it came with 2004.

Anyone has a clue and what to do about it? It might effect when I need to do more heavy work. At the moment I only do minor editing.

    //Best Regards

    Re: Re:High CPU usage

    Hi.

No.Because when I work with these small projects I create a Project Bin and import all relevant files. All import folders are pointing to my default folders. The only thing I change is the snapshot folder if I need it. The high cpu for system is there even if I start PS with no project.

I read somewhere that high cpu could be caused by device drivers, but the high "system" cpu usage is only when I run PS.

I will check everything once more when I switch on my system tomorrow.

    //Thanks for asking

Here is a screenshot from my computer.

There is nothing on the timeline.

Win 2004 hasn't rolled out to my area yet, so still using 1909 (OS Build 18383.959)

    Re: Re:High CPU usage

    Hi.

I have created my own screen shots, but how do I show them?  "Insert/edit image" looks complicated.

I have also cleared all "missing files" etc with no difference.

    Hi.

Here they come. While one file I skip the before with 1%.

    Re: Re:High CPU usage

PS is not using 30%. More like 3.7%. That's nothing.

    Re: Re:High CPU usage

    Hi.

PS is not the problem, but PS triggers "System" to use 30% of the CPU which means that PS only has 70% or less of the the CPU. In your case you probably will have 85-95% for i.e. rendering.

If one has limited resources,  then one do not want loose it to unnecessary load.

I am not sure it is a problem, but it is an observation and maybe a future problem.

Anyone else who has updated to Win10 version 2004 and has a similar or opposite observation?

I do have Windows version 2004 installed but like Tony my CPU  usage is around 14% with NGStudio around 1% or less (the numbers bounce around). The main culprit on my system is a task called Radeon Settings: Host Application which is running at around 12%. If I close Pinnacle, the system settles down to around 12-13% which is expected.

Ijavres, your main culprit is your System which is running at 32% (mine is zero). If you sum all the other active tasks they amount to about 30% making your total 62% CPU. If you turn off Pinnacle, I would suspect your total CPU usage would drop to say 58% but what you are suggesting is the CPU usage drops to 1%!? That is very odd. I would like to see another screen shot with Pinnacle not running.

    Re: High CPU usage

    Hi.

The total CPU usage is not 1%. It is "System" that goes down to 1%. If other people do not see what I see then I will suspect my equipment and I will then try to eliminate what ever is possible to see if my "problem" disappears.  All projects are kept on the E: drive, where I also keep the render folders.

This image is after I have closed PS23 and all PS23 files are closed.

    Re: High CPU usage

    That is a a dramatic change, because your previous screen shot showed CPU at 62% and system at 32%! You may be able to reverse the update . Go to;

    1. Windows settings
    2. Update and Security
    3. Recovery
    4. Go back to a previous version of Windows 10
But like I said, I recently upgraded to version 2004 OS build 19041.388  but I'm not experiencing the same issue. Unless someone else has an idea, good luck. And if you do find out what the issue is, please post an update so we can all benefit from your finding.

    Re: High CPU usage

I'm still not seeing a high CPU usage at all with PS23 open and a project on the timeline.

    Re: High CPU usage

    Hi.

I do not have the possibility to revert to Win10 1909 while due to low space on C: drive I made some cleaning. My W10 2004 is of build 19041.388.

As I wrote before I may work with PS23 and its great new features in my present projects.

I will post in this thread if anything new.

    Re: High CPU usage

    Hi.

Today I removed all USB drives, tried to start PS21, changed settings in PS23 and more. Between every change I restarted PS23. I restarted my computer sometimes.

During my trying to locate the source of "high System cpu usage" I got a message that I needed to restart my computer. Typical windows upgrade.

After every (re)start the ms antivirus and spyhunter hogs my computer. When they have done their work I may start PS23.

Suddenly there is no more "high System cpu usage" anymore. The proof and the ms update are shown in the image. I do not know what happened, but it must be something from above.

    10aug2020

Sorry to say but after a short time of happiness I have my old problem back. I have also done a PS23 reset and erased all render files without any difference.

    Re: High CPU usage

To solve your issue is a process of elimination. As a test, I suggest you reboot Windows but don't connect to the internet. Start Pinnacle Studio and let it idle for 5 min. What are your results?

Just another observation regarding you computer. I assume you are using a desktop? You indicate you are using a Geforce GT640 but I don't see any GPU listed in your task manager. See Tony P's screen shot for an example.

    Re: High CPU usage

    Hi.

Disable internet was something new. I have reset PS23 from PS-Setting, I have repaired PS23, I have removed and installed PS23. Then I removed my network cable (no wifi) and disabled all network adapters. I have restarted my machine and waited for Spyhunter and  MS Antimalware to complete (say 10-15 minutes) between every change. I have now installed the latest NVIDA recommended drivers etc.

I am still at square one and who stole my GPU flags and when. The only hardware difference is that my display went black and I bought a 4K screen and is now running on HDMI instead of DVI. CUDA is set from "Automatic detect" in PS-Setting.

I have processed  about five short "movies" with success. A short movie has less than 100 objects and lasts less than 10 minutes. All with "System" and no GPU.

    Re: High CPU usage

Well it sounds like your system is working acceptably for you. If you take Donald Trump's advice; if you don't test, you won't get any cases! But if you are still curious then I have two suggestions:

Just to prove to yourself its not PS23, if you have access to an old/other computer, just install it on that system and see how the CPU runs.

My second  suggestion would be to back up, or better yet, take an image of your system using Acronis or a similar program and then reset your PC which will take it back to factory settings. I would then run task manager to obtain a baseline followed by a re-installation of Pinnacle only (no Spyhunter or anything except Windows default programs) and again run task manager to see what happens. I would only do this if I had noticed that the performance of my PC had substantially reduced and I was unhappy with it. So that is your personal decision.

    Good luck Smile

    Re: High CPU usage

    Hi.

Even if the GPU flag is not shown in Task Manager/Processes the GPU is used when I try to Export a movie. See image. To do a total reinstall of Win10 seems to be very drastic for me. I think I have to coexist with my culprit until I find it.

I am not thinking the PS is the perpetrator, but PS addresses some weak point in my system.

    Later:

Sorry to say, but the missing GPU flag was only due to missing column setting
