    H.265 successor

While most people have ended up (often without knowing it) by adopting H.264 in their video capture devices (camcorder, smartphones, ...), while H.265 is just beginning to be deployed on these same devices (essentially smartphones) and in the editing softwares, the specifications of their successor, the H.266, have just been finalized. I think it should take 2 or 3 years more before we should see it enter the consumer market.

What's the licencing situation? I suspect AV1 (which is open source) is going to give the mpeg people competion on that front.
