Ways and Means for 4K Editing (no proxy edit available)

I can't find proxy edit in Pinn Studio 23 Ultimate.

Does not appear in timeline settings controls.

    Manual doesn't help.

I want to edit 4K by proxy.

    Thanks,

    CW

    Re:Proxy edit settings

You can't find it because that's not a feature available in Studio.

    Re: Re:Proxy edit settings

From Pinnacle Studio 23 User Guide:

"Using Smart Proxy for a faster, smoother editing experience The main purpose of Smart Proxy is to provide a more fluid editing and previewing experience when working with large, high resolution video files. Smart Proxy creates lower resolution working copies of larger source files. These smaller files are called “proxy” files. Using proxy files speeds up editing of high resolution projects (for example, projects that have HDV and AVCHD source files). Proxy files are source-dependent rather than project-dependent. In other words, proxy files can be shared among different projects. When you render a video project, the original, high-quality video source files are used. Multi-Camera Editing 269 You can use the Smart Proxy Manager to enable or disable Smart Proxy, change the default resolution threshold that enables Smart Proxy, and access the Smart Proxy File Manager and Smart Proxy Queue Manager to manage existing and future proxy files."

    What am I missing here?

This part of the user manual is dedicated to Multi-cameras editor only.

    Re: Re:Proxy edit settings

    I see.

Is there a Pinn 23 procedure for editing 4K, or is more powerful computer required?

    Re: Re:Proxy edit settings

Except enabling background rendering and wait for the render to finish to get good playback, the only way to edit smoothly 4K footage is to have a powerful computer.

A good graphics card with hardware decoding/encoding for H.264 or H265 is a good start. Cost around $150.

    Re: Re:Proxy edit settings

You just have "i7" listed as your CPU..... not much info.

But the biggest strongest CPU is what is needed to edit 4K.

    Re: Re:Proxy edit settings

I'll upgrade the graphics card. Is the rest of the system adequate for occasional 4K?

Current graphics card, Intel HD 4600

    Intel Core i7-4770S CPU @ 3.10GHz 3.10

    16 GB

    64-bit, x64-based processor

    Re: Re:Proxy edit settings

How is your current hardware acceleration setup in PS23's control panel ?

With this setting to Intel, you should get benefit of the integrated Intel HD 4600.

    Re: Re:Proxy edit settings

Hmmm. It was set on AMD. Or possibly to Autodetect, not sure.

I have changed the hardware acceleration setting to INTEL.  We'll see if that's better.

    Thanks for your help.

    Re: Re:Proxy edit settings

For 4K, I use a i9-9900k OC'd with no graphics card.  4K editing is now as fast as 1080p used to be with the i7-6700k.

    But what about this.

     https://www.pinnaclesys.com/en/tips/basics/4k-video-editing/

This "tips" link clearly says  you can enable Smart Proxy for 4k files. Doesn't it?

    Hi Steve,

I'll escalate this link to my main contact at Corel to see what he can say about it.

For the time being, there is no Smart Proxy in PS23, except in the Multicams editor.

Saby, where can I find smart proxy in MultiCam? And where can I find the MultiCam editor?

    Attachment: MCE SmartProxy.jpg

On the timeline toolbar you will see an icon made up of 4 little boxes. But Multicam Editor is only available and the Plus and Ultimate versions.

In the MCE editor you will see a little gear in the upper left corner. Click on it and you will see the image below.

Go through the options to choose where to store the files, what size files to have proxies created and even which files.

    Tony P:

On the timeline toolbar you will see an icon made up of 4 little boxes. But Multicam Editor is only available and the Plus and Ultimate versions.

Thanks Tony. I was searching the manual under 'MultiCam' but only got two items. After some more searching, I discovered that the other entries are listed under 'Multi-Camera'. Next, duh, I realized that 'Multi-Camera' is prominently listed in the menu. With all the new information I'm trying to absorb, I just missed that....

Unfortunately, I have again an issue with Multi-Cam. After I drag some clips to the MC editor and click 'OK,' it crashes PS 23U. Is this a known issue?

Or, I wonder, might this have something to do with the earlier issue I had that caused MultiCam not wanting to start up at all. Fortunately, Support was able to fix this.

No crashes with MCE, and none that I have read here in the forum.

That means I'll have to contact support again. Thanks for the quick reply.

I have a question: Do any of you use the MC editor to take advantage of the proxy settings?

Re: Specs for 4K Editing (no proxy edit available)

The proxy files are used only during the editing inside the Multicams editor to help displaying at the same time up to six 4K videos.

Once you exit the Multicams editor, proxy files are no longer used.

Re: Specs for 4K Editing (no proxy edit available)

I understand that but I was wondering if people use this facility to edit multiple/complex clips of 4K footage and then take the result back to PS again.
