Help - Have I bought the right thing? Outputting a 360 Video

    Hi All

I have a 3D modelling package which can produce the equirectangular images that can convert to 360 images - the sort that you can look around by click-dragging the mouse.

I have loaded such an image (it's a still) and in the Edit Tab I can see that a 360 preview is apparent and useable - it can be dragged by the mouse - great that is what I want. However the timeline always shows the rectilinear image and every time I export anything all I get is rectilinear???

How do you export a file that looks and acts like the 360 preview?

I have assumed that my still image will still make a movie - just a dull one!

    Cheers

James - waiting in anticipaton of that secret check box....

Hi James and welcome to this forum.

Once the still picture on the timeline, make sure that the timeline aspect is actually set to 360 :

    Hi Saby

Thanks for the reply - I have set that parameter but the timeline image still stays 2D

Ah, found out how to attach a pic.

    Hi Saby

The output file looks the same -  Is there some special software that I need to play it with? I'm using the latest VLC player which apparently can play the 360 files.

To make sure that the exported file is a 360 video, import it in Studio and look if you can drag the image with your mouse.

VLC 3.0 is supposed to be able to play 360 videos, but I never managed to do it.

    Use GoPro VR Player, instead.

    Hi Saby

No joy with Go Pro, all I get is a black screen that flickers occasionally (there is also a small banner at the top of the screen that flickers with 'Go Pro' label.

Am I right is saying that a 360 video is just (say) .png equirectangular images arranged as a video file but with meta data to tell the player that it should convert the equirectangular  image to a 360 frame?

So in fact my original equirectangular videos we almost there - but the meta data was missing?

There is no clear technical decription of 360 video files on the net that I can find?

What was your export setting in Studio ?

All I know is that 360° videos are an equirectangular projection of a 360° "scene". Just like earth when seen in a planisphere.

I'm using some video sample from a Kodak SP360 camera for the purpose of some tests with Studio but I'm not at all a 360° video hobbyist. These videos are detected by Studio and GoPro VR Player as 360° videos and once exported by Studio, the new video is still detected by Studio and GoPro VR Player as a 360° video.

I guess some metadatas should be present to tell the player whether it is actually a 360° video or not. But I know nothing about it.

Re: Re:Help - Have I bought the right thing? Outputting a 360 Video

    Hi Saby

Looks like I didn't need Pinnacle or that Pinnacle actually does what it is supposed to!

I've produced an equirectangular video and used a very simple Python program to 'inject' what I assume is just a line of Metadata saying - this is an equirectangular video that I want to be shown as a 360 Video.

Using the Python Progra VLC happily plays it correctly.

     Cheers
