Old 8mm home movies - aspect

I feel like the answer is in front of my nose but I can't see it.  I've used the Wolverine Moviemaker Pro to get some old 8mm home movies transferred to an SD card.  I then move them over to my PC.  I use Studio 17 to import them, and something here is causing the imported files to look stretched.  Those old cameras seemed to film in what looked like 4/3....TV size.  What I'm seeing on my import is widescreen.  The really odd thing is that most things look okay, and some look a bit longer than they should.  Nothing has that really "stretched" look that you might see with artificial widescreen. I'm a bit stumped.
