Suggested Changes to Transition & Fade Handling in Studio 22U.2.0.325

A Support ticket has been raised with Corel Technical Support as follows:

In the Control Panel > Project Settings > Transition Mode there is an option for 'Overlap Clips' that does not appear to work:

    1. When a Transition is Dragged, Added via the Context Menu or Sent to the Timeline, the clips are not overlapped and the Timeline is not shortened as I believe was intended by the setting.  It appears that 'Maintain Timeline Sync' is always applied in error.

    2. When using the Ripple function in the Transition Editor to ripple a Transition or a Fade the selected clips are not overlapped when the 'Overlap Clips' option is set.

Please arrange for the 'Overlap Clips' option to be applied as intended when:
    - Transitions are added to/placed on the Timeline
    - Rippling Transitions and Fades to selected clips on the Timeline.

The following improvements could also be considered for Transition and Fade (Cross-Fade) handling:

    - In the clip context menu there are 2 options; 'IN Transition' and 'OUT Transition'.  Suggest replace these options with 'Transitions' and an option to add an IN or OUT or CENTRE (at start or end of selected clip) Transition along with the Edit options currently available.

    - When adding a Transition from the Context Menu the IN, OUT or CENTRE Transition should be added to all clips selected on the Timeline (not just the last selected clip).  Replicate as per PS21.2 to add Transitions to multiple clips.

    - In the Transitiion Editor the Ripple function ripples a CENTRE Transition or Fade (Cross-Fade) as appropriate.  Suggest add an option to Ripple with same properties and characteristics as the item being rippled.

Any other suggestions regarding Transition and Fade handling welcome.

Re: Suggested Changes to Transition & Fade Handling in Studio 22U.2.0.325

    jjn

Some further input that may be useful in any communication with Corel.  I was hesitant to say this previously as it might be seen as criticism or an attempt at design that 'techos' don't like, or conflict with other design plans by Corel.  However, it seems pretty straight forward, at least to me.

The Fades (cross-fades) in PS22.2 are handled based on the Timeline Mode.  OVERWRITE MODE creates still frames and maintains the Timeline Sync.  INSERT/SMART MODES overlap the clips and shorten the Timeline.  This is excellent.

The Ripple Fade (cross-fade) function should follow the same rules, unfortunately they currently always create still frames to Maintain Sync.

I cannot see why add, drag, send Transitions to the Timeline cannot be handled the same way as Fades (cross-fades)....based on the Timeline Mode.  The Context Menu would need three options as suggested above (CENTRE (to start/end of clip), OUT or IN).

The Ripple Transition function to also follow the Timeline mode rules.

There would be no need for the Transition Mode setting in the Control Panel (that currently does not work).  The problem with this setting is that if there are multiple projects in progress they could be at various stages of editing meaning that the Control Panel option may need to be re-set each time a Project is opened.

Sorry, I guess I'm just looking at it too simplistically but I don't think it is all that difficult to understand the concept.  Probably not an issue for short projects but this processing has a significant impact on long-form projects.

Thanks for posting theses suggestions. The changes to transitions has been one of the most radical developments to PS in years, particularly as the designers initially left no backward compatibility path.

The more feedback on this thread the better IMHO.

Re: Suggested Changes to Transition & Fade Handling in Studio 22U.2.0.325

    Update:

The following issue was added to the Support Ticket:

Another issue in Studio 22U.2.0.325 when creating an IN Fade (cross-fade) on a clip when the Timeline is in Insert or Smart mode.

The left clip that is being overlapped and all clips to the left of it are being pulled to the right creating a gap at the beginning of the Timeline and causes sync issues to the left of the edit point.

In this situation all clips on the track to the right of the edit point should be pulled to the left as the clip is trimmed to accommodate the Fade (cross-fade). (There should be no gaps or track sync issues created to the left of the edit point. The sync issues caused by the overlapping should be to the right of the edit point).

Corel Tech Support suggested 'Delete Temp Files' and 'Re-name Pinnacle & Pinnacle_Studio_22 Folders' to try and resolve the issues.

PS22U.2.0.325 was again tested with Transition Mode in control Panel set to 'Overlap Clips' and Timeline in 'Insert Mode'

NOTE: The Transition Mode setting also controls the handling of Fades (cross-fades between clips) for overlap purposes.

A summary of the issues passed to Corel Tech Support is set out below.  CTS advised the issues have been referred to the next level of Support.

    FADES (Cross-fades between clips)

    - Add or adjust duration of a Fade (cross-fade) is OK, however there is an issue when adding a Fade IN - the clips to the left of the edit point shift to the right leaving a gap at the beginning of the track.  Also creates sync problems with other tracks to the left of the edit point.  The clips to the right of the edit point should shift left. (The similar action for Transitions works correctly).

    - Adjust the duration via the Transition Editor does not overlap and still frames are created.  The clips should overlap.as for manual adjustments.

    TRANSITIONS

    - The following actions do not overlap the clips (still frames are created):

        . Drag Transition to Timeline

. Adjust duration via the Transition Editor

. Add IN or OUT Transition via the Context Menu

NOTE: After a Transition is added to the Timeline (no overlap) the duration can be increased but not decreased below the value when added to the Timeline.  After one or two manual changes this appears for some reason to stop overlapping.

    - Cannot add IN or OUT Transition to multiple clips selected on the Timeline.  Transition is only added to the last selected clip.  Suggest that transition should be added to all clips selected on the Timeline and overlapped if Transition Mode is set to 'Overlap Clips' and Timeline is in Insert Mode. (as per PS21U.2)

    - When Transition Mode is set to 'Overlap Clips' and Timeline is in Insert Mode Ripple of Transitions and Fades (Cross-Fades between clips) should overlap the selected clips (no still frames to be created).

NOTE: The purpose of the Transition Mode function in the Control Panel is still unclear after further testing as the Timeline Mode should be able control the handling of Fades (cross-fades) and Transitions.  INSERT and SMART modes overlaps the clips, shortens the Timeline and does not create still frames. OVERWRITE Mode creates still frames and maintains Track Sync.

No response at this point from the next level Support.

Re: Suggested Changes to Transition & Fade Handling in Studio 22U.2.0.325

Corel is at a critical turning point with Studio.  I hope they are listening, and even more important, I hope they are using a source code management software like Mercurial so that these revision changes, that should be conditional compile options, can become Boolean config options on the configuration screen.

A simple click can step the source code back to any point in time and see what and how each function worked and was coded, and then allow them to compare the differences in that source code to the source code of any other revisions. It helps prevent/workout all these bugs/issues.

    Let's hope.....

Yes, I saw the list you provided and commented on it.  Impressive.  Now to just decide how the transitions need to work and make them work correctly.
