even more rendering problems
I thought I had resolved the problem with a previous movie, but it's back! I have been using Pan & Zoom on this project to increase the video size to fit and also to make some images closer, but cant see the changes for hours as rendering is almost at a stand-still. I checked set-up and varied Optimization threshold from about 20 to maximum, checked render form on to auto and acceleration from what was on the setup (Cuda) to Intel as Intel is my system default. I have also removed all old projects and done a through disk clean up and drive wipe (empty space only) I have checked my system information which showed i5 7400 @ 3.00GHz, 4 core and 8GB Ram.....could this be part of the problem? My last option which I about to try out, is to export the movie for DVD and select render completely before export, go back to edit to see if the rendering has been completed...this may not work, but at least its worth trying. Regards for any helpful reply. Ian

Re: even more rendering problems
What do you mean when you refer to rendering? The background "render for preview" process that allows complex parts of the movie (having CPU-intensive effects) to play smoothly in the preview? Or the actual export process (making the output file or disc image)? In the comments below I have assumed that you are referring to the "background render for preview"... - What timeline setting are you using? Make sure it's not "too high" (IMO no benefit in having the timeline set to 4K (3840x2016) and then exporting at (say) HD720 (1280x720)). In most cases having the timeline matching the desired export frame size is the "best" - with the possible exception of a final product in standard-definition (e.g. DVD); better-looking results may be obtained by exporting an intermediate file as full-HD 1920x1080 and using that in the disc project (works around poor text quality in the classic (motion) title editor).
- What setting for "Preview Quality" have you set in Studio's control panel ("export and preview" page? If you have set to "Best quality" - change back to "Balanced" (or even "Fastest playback") unless you have a specific (niche) requirement of working with two monitors and seeing the preview at full-screen on the second monitor at a resolution/quality comparable with the final export.
- Note that preview render files are MPEG-2; the generation of these is always via a software codec (so fiddling with the hardware acceleration setting (Cuda/Intel/None) will have no significant effect). The biggest speed-up will be achieved by reducing the frame size of the preview files by not using "Best Quality"
- If the slowdown is being caused by the Pan & Zoom effect (and not by the render process) try using a different effect (where you just need a constant amount of zoom-in use the "2D Editor CPU" effect instead - and if for the video clips the sole purpose of the zoom-in is to remove pillarbox bars when putting 4:3 clips on a 16:9 timeline, try adjusting the "scaling" (right-click the clip on the timeline and choose Scaling -> Fill instead of Fit)
- All that stuff relating to "render completely before export" - I've never had to touch it (I think it is there in order to troubleshoot or workaround particular issues in an export (I've never had to change any of those settings from their installation defaults).
Regards, Richard

Re: even more rendering problems
Will try your suggestions - timeline & preview quality. The render completely before start did nothing, so that was a waste of time. Would the best acceleration setting be the default ir Intel/ Will let you know how I get on with your sdvice Thanks Ian

Re: even more rendering problems
I would set it to Intel. Your processor has a built in GPU(Intel 530). PS will take advantage of that when it can.

Re: even more rendering problems
Will Do! I did reset to HD 1280 X 720 and best quality to balanced, then the brown line filled completely, but after about 30 sec's all of the areas above each transition slowly went green then cleared completely, the remaining clips with the pan & zoom have just started to also go green but very very slowly, but at least something is working at last. Thanks again Ian Another possibility I just remembered, I copied some video using Expressions encoder 4, but I kept the FPS at 25, but increased the bit rate from 30000 to 50000 hoping to get smoother results.???

Re: even more rendering problems
Maybe something else is running on your computer using CPU/GPU time? Maybe your CPU is throttling because of heat? My i7-6700k computer that I use for video editing was slowing down recently. Turns out the thermal compound inside the CPU was drying out, so the CPU was running hot and throttling/slowing down to keep it from damaging itself. The indicator my son used was that the temperature of the CPU would rise very fast when encoding a video. The rise was faster than the heat spreader plate(cover) on the CPU should allow. It would rise 70 degrees F in under two seconds. My son removed the lid(Heat Spreader) from the I-6700k with a razor blade and replaced the thermal compound inside. My computer is now back to full speed. It's great again. I guess they used to solder the heat spreader to the die of the CPU, but now they just use regular heat sink compound. My gopro fusion software stitches the back and front half of the 360 video together. It can run my i7-6700k OC to 5GHz for 4-5 days to stitch together 3 hours of video. I guess all the OC'd stitching baked the thermal compound dry. Picture of my i7-6700 with lid removed attached.

Re: even more rendering problems
While PS is rendering, I.E. Brown turning to Green above the timeline, have Task manager open with the CPU usage view visible. Make sure the actual CPU frequency(Circled in Red), is running at the CPU rated frequency(Circled in Green). It might not be the exact same as the screen capture below. The screen capture is from a Windows 8.1 computer I have at work.

Re: even more rendering problems
I doubt it is a memory fault problem. It could be not enough memory and it is paging memory to one of your hard disk's(virtual Memory). That would slow it way down. If you have 8gig or more of ram, you can turn off Virtual memory. See how much free memory you have in task manager and resource monitor when running PS, and not running PS.

Re: even more rendering problems
The trick is to find out how much of the memory being used is Virtual memory on the hard drive, which is thousands of times slower than your actual RAM. I haven't found a clear way to do that in Win10.

Re: even more rendering problems
You can disable virtual memory, but if I was the OP, I wouldn't. Virtual memory will only come into play when approaching the max that is being used. Since he is only using 59%, virtual memory is not being used. You haven't mentioned what your Optimization is set at. Is Render While Play on?
What is the source of your video? Resolution? Anti virus off? What specific programs are running the background too? Are your Intel graphics drivers up to date? Do you also have an Nvidia graphics card? Have you tried turning Hardware Acceleration to NONE? What specifically is the basis for you saying you are having rendering problems?

Re: even more rendering problems
Not sure which version of Windows he is using. Win10 doesn't separate Virtual from physical. At least I can't find it. So, if his usage is at 59% and 50% of his memory is virtual, he could be using 9% of virtual.

Re: even more rendering problems
From all my reading, virtual memory in Win10 is used when the program calls for more memory than what is available. What I would like to know from the OP is exactly how much RAM is being used. I still do not think he is running into VM.

Re: even more rendering problems
I will answer your questions tomorrow, but the basis for my problems seems to be the use of pan and zoom. If not useing P&Z I don't seem to have problems. Ian

Re: even more rendering problems
Are you using the old pan & zoom by right clicking on the clip, or are you using the new pan & zoom in the editor? I haven't had any luck with the new one in the editor. The old one gives me no problems.

Re: even more rendering problems
acsscott Same as me, I found it easy on previous versions of Pinnacle, but I have managed to get it working on Pinnacle 21. I just highlight the section of the video I want to pan/zoom, open pan & zoom in editor, make sure I get the picture and the red marker at the beginning of the section, click on the white marker along the appropriate action (zoom, horizontal, vertical) so as to position the start point, then move the required slider to the position you want. I then moved the marker on the timeline to the end of the selected section and repressed the white marker to pin the position at the end, adjusted the slider etc and that did it for me. I know this is not the best of details as I'm still NOT fully into using PS 21....however, look for one of the training videos on PS web site....they work a treat! regards Ian
