    XDCAM EX Update

    Okay folks,

After I was done drooling over my new toy, I took it out for some test footage. I shot footage in the following six available formats:

    1080/60i, 1080/30p, 1080/24p, 720/60p, 720/30p and 720/24p

Oh, and in case you're wondering, the footage looks insane (especially on my 42inch plasma) and the low-light performance is unbelievable. Anyways, I loaded it up on my PC and attempted to import the footage into Liquid 7.2. No dice folks, it crashed during every import attempt of each different format. My Liquid station is very stable and this is the first time it has crashed. I know Sony has released a software update for a few of the NLE's, but Liquid was not on that list (as usual).

Liquid did recognize the files in their location, but failed to import. I'm open to ideas or suggestions as far as settings that may be used to try and import the footage. As of this writing, I've had no luck...

    Re: XDCAM EX Update

Did you use the software that came with EX1?

It's a software for browsing the files.

    Re: XDCAM EX Update

What is the file format and any chance of posting a sample file somewhere (1080p24 and/or 720p24?) so that we can download and attempt to transcode it (or figure out some way to get it into Liquid)?

    Thanks

    Re: XDCAM EX Update

You cannot directly import from the camera. You must convert the video first. Jason Bock posted this on the Liquid beta board:

    Hi everyone,

Great news!, I've just downloaded the 'release' version of the Sony XDCAM EX Clip Browsing Software V1.1 :
    http://www.sonybiz.net/biz/view/ShowContent.action?site=biz_en_GB&contentId=1193315622075

I'm happy to say that the MXF files that are generated from this program now import correctly into Liquid and playback fine. This is in both SP mode (1440 x 1080 HDV) and HQ mode (1920 x 1080 & 1280 x 720). All standard framerates appear to work. I don't have any 'off speed' files as yet to try, but regardless it's very encouraging.

So there's life in the 'ol girl yet :-)

    Cheers,

I have heard that Sony is using Liquid to test this camera.

That was the software I was talking about and it's free to download for everyone.

I did install the software that came with the camera, but now I'll try it with the update that Lew posted. I'll post in a little bit (I gotta drive back home now).

    Re: XDCAM EX Update

Sorry for the delay. I just shot footage from my kid's basketball game, so I'm going to try loading it in Liquid. By the way, the over/under cranking feature in this camera is incredible.

Anyone got any comments on how long the conversion process takes ?

    Re: XDCAM EX Update

I see that there will be an EX presentation by Sony at the DV Expo Wednesday, 3-4 PM. This is in Los Angeles. The Red One 4K will also make an appearance.

    Re: XDCAM EX Update

Smile Just shot clips with my new EX1. Used the export witrh Sony's software to convert to MXF and then imported into Liquid. Works just fine. The only problem I had was the software supplied with the camera on CD was version 1.0 and the MXF didn't work. I downloaded version and had no further problems.

Ray - those images are absolutely beautiful. I won't give the camera full credit, but it's obvious the EX1 is fantastic in low light!

    Thanks

    Re: XDCAM EX Update

Did a little more experimenting with clips imported into Liquid. Rendering takes a little time when you drop it on even a hi-def timeline. And there's additional processing necessary to drop it into an NTSC SD timeline. I can see speed and workflow implications all over the place but it does work and doesn't seem to cause trouble. I have the Sony software open at the same time as Liquid without any issues.

How do others work? Looks to me like the best way is to complete a project on the High-definition timeline and then copy that to an NTSC SD timeline when finished to render only the stuff that will be in the finished show. Any thoughts?

    Re: XDCAM EX Update

You say that it has to render even on an HD timeline? That doesn't sound right. What are you clip properties and what are your timeline properties?

    Thanks

    Re: XDCAM EX Update

yes that doesn't right.  At the worse the settings may not match perfectly but the clip would still be yellow sliced.  Are you using a 1440x1080 sequence for 1920x1080 material or the other way around?  If anything isn't matched perfectly then your clips will be yellow sliced and if you have render yellow slices on you will end up rendering everything when it is plopped in the TL.
