Buying new photographic equipment on Amazon?

With Christmas fast approaching, please be very cautious if you plan to buy any expensive new photographic kit from a Marketplace seller on Amazon UK or USA. If you're sending a wish list to others, please warn them of the danger too.

Bogus sellers are inviting you to buy high-value goods at ridiculously low prices. They usually instruct you to contact them direct using a non-Amazon email address before placing an order. Don't do it!  If you do, they'll send you a reply asking for your shipping address (because they only have your email address and don't have access to Amazon's customer database or payments system). Give them that information and they'll send you a confirmation of your order using a forged Amazon format, telling you to pay by bank transfer or Amazon Gift Cards. If you persist and follow their instructions, you will never see the goods, you will lose your money and you will be unable to obtain a refund from Amazon as they were not involved in the transaction!

Only place your order and pay through your Amazon basket and checkout facility.

Yes indeed, scammers are everywhere - but right now they are bigger than ever on Amazon, in the UK, USA and Germany in particular.

All of the scammers offer photographic kit - cameras, camcorders, lenses, plus computers and other electrical goods - at very low prices and are robbing people in their hundreds every day. Annoyingly, Amazon are doing little or nothing to eradicate the problem - hence my warning. I do hope all members will take note of this.

I'd change the old adage to read:

If it's on Amazon and it seems too good to be true, it certainly is!
