    Importing Studio14 project to Studio18

Finally I got my S18Ult running on Win10 machine - excellent thanks to support from Corel :)

I then took a project done in S14Ult - used the Import-from-previus-versions tool to convert to S18.

I get a timeline with a DVD, Title, PVT and sound track.

A Menu is present in the DVD track - but the text is missing.

The title text is shifted to the left - so text starts outside of video.

And all chapter information is gone.

The menu and titles was created in S14 and saved in seperate subdit to where the original project is.

Is it really true that you have to rebuild all menu and chapter info when going from S14 to S18 ? I hope I have missed something...

    Thanks

    Yes Sad

The newer versions of Studio (Avid Studio onwards) can only imoirt movie projects created in the older version (10 - 15); although the menu sort-of imports it shows only as a place-holder (yellow "disc" icon) and you can't do anything useful with it...

In my experience, importing of titles is a bit "hit and miss"; generally they will need some re-work to sort out the text positioning and formatting. And many of the "looks" present in the legacy "classic title edfitor" don't have any equivalent in the current title editor.

    Regards,
    Richard

The Authoring section of newer versions of Studio have been rewritten from scratch, hence the complete incompatibility between the 2 systems.

Thanks Richard and Saby for reply.

Shocking news to me that a software developer in this way just ignores existing customers and legacy data.

Have 200+ projects done with STU 8,9,12 and 14 - and moving to STU18 (and forward) I have to redo everything if I want to edit them - amazing this is happening.

With Corel knowing the structure of data - one should think they at least could attempt to import data in a proper maner -not a good move from them just ignoring existing users like this !

Sorry, I have to disagree. How long must software be tied to the past? S14 is 7 years behind. 7 years. How is Pinnacle going to advance and maintain full backwards compatibility? How can they import your DVD structure if it's not in place now? How long is a product going to have to be saddled with carrying legacy code for products?

I had Studio from S9-S15U. Also had the DV500 which used Premiere. There was no porting over Premiere to Studio after the DV500 came to it's end. Same with Avid Liquid and Pro One. Avid Studio did not import anything for Avid Liquid, and it was suppose to be the replacement for it. Avid Liquid cost far more than any Studio version out there. It just wasn't in the programming.

Re: Importing Studio14 project to Studio18

I'm not advocating for backward compatability so a Studio20 project can be "Saved As" Pin14 - but I think they could make a better efford in reading and importing the legacy projects.

As you say - with many versions of different software Pinnacle has just left the legacy data behind - and asked users to redo stuff in a migration.

Abit like a 3D Cad system importing part files - but ignoring all the assemblys. Not good.

I'm not doing any fancy stuff - a simple DVD project - you are not able to import into a newer version - it is irritating - and my view is that there is room for improvement of the importing tool.

Because of my previous statement :

I'm sure this room for improvement would require a lot of work => the ratio benefit/effort would be much smaller than 1.
