Capturing AVCHD with Studio Plus 12

I am using Pinnacle Studio Plus 12 with a desktop computer running W7 and trying to import video from a Sony Camcorder HDR-PJ240E which I think uses AVCHD.

When I open Studio and try to capture from the camcorder via USB Studio does not recognise the camcorder. When I open Studio and try to use ‘import  media’ via USB Studio does not recognise the camcorder. Studio seems to prefer firewire which the camcorder doesn’t have.

I have managed to connect the camcorder to the pc through USB and download the video through Windows Media, and open the clips in Studio, but the date of the clips do not show as normal. Is this the best I can hope for, or is there a way of getting the video off the camcorder through Studio?

You need to use a USB capture device as this one or the 500-USB capture device or a movieboard PCI (make sure they are compatible with your OS).

No need to use such USB devices.

    2 solutions :

    • insert the SD card of the camcorder to a card reader on your PC (if you have one) and import the files with Studio

    or

    • connect the camcorder to the PC in USB and use Sony's Playmemories Home free software to transfer the videos into the PC. Then import them in Studio.

I hadn't planned to use Sony's software Playmemories Home but if I do will the files be dated as before? They are not dated when I use Windows Media Player.

Now considering getting a card reader, but how is that is different from connecting the camcorder to the pc? Studio can't recognise the camcorder but will it be able to recognise the card and import (or capture) the video?

There is no need for Studio to recognize the camcorder, nor the SD card.

When connecting the cam to the pc via USB Windows will show it as a device in Explorer, same goes for the SD card inserted in a card reader and connected to pc.

Then just copy/paste the files from cam (or card reader) to a HDD on pc and browse the Studio 12 album to that HDD location.

Yes, that's another advantage to use this tool.

On the SD card the files are recorded by the camera with names like that : 00000.MTS, 00001.MTS, ...

Once imported by PMH they get these kind of names : 20151204143251.m2ts

The structure is yearmonthdayhoursminutesseconds of recording.

Not always Paul. Two concurrent protocols are existing to connect a device in USB : USB Mass Storage (UMS) or Media Transer Protocol (MTP). For example, there is a setting for that in my Sony Nex VG 20. If I select Mass Storage Studio sees my camera, if I select MTP, it gets blind.

Re: Capturing AVCHD with Studio Plus 12

Thanks for the replies. It's the dating of the video clips I'm after as I have a complex job, a whole year's footage from two camcorders which may in some cases be merged (holiday, Christmas) where the two families were together. With so many clips dates are essential. When Studio captured from my old DV camcorder all the footage was dated so I'd like to retain this.

I have managed to get all the footage on the pc through Windows Media Player but they show in Studio as numbered clips 1, 2, 3 with no dates.  Will a card reader be any different, or is Playmemories Home software my best bet?

    No.

    Yes.

Thanks for a brief and clear reply! Sometimes it seems the software (or is it the hardware) goes backwards not forwards. It was much easier when the footage was captured with dates.
