I'm editing a 60 minute movie.

After about 10 minutes of editing, if I make any edit (even just adding a a keyframe (or deleting one as an example)), there is a time delay of about 20s before I can play the movie or indeed do another edit.

In Settings/Preview,  "Quality" is set to "Fastest Playback" and "Optimization Threshold" is set to 50.

I'm using Windows 7 64 bit . The attached may assist.

Also what does happen if yo close Studio and reopen it ? Is edting immediatly smoother ?

I'm running 17.6.01.332. I assume that  it's up-to-date?

Closing PS17 and reopening does produce a reduction in the time lag but not for long. If I shut down the PC, the time lag takes about 15m of editing to produce the significant time lag. 

BTW. The lag seems to occur in two stages. Following an edit of any kind, after about 10 - 15s there is a brief audio noise from the soundtrack (about 1s) and then you have to wait another 10 - 15s for the video "to catch up".

I can't give you details of what TM shows when the "Low Memory" message appears as I cannot predict when it will happen again.

 

However, attached some screen shots from TM with only PS17 open.

 

The first attachment shows applications open; the second shows processes (listed in order of memory usage); and the rest show services with those with "Running" status appearing first.

 

(It would appear that I can only show one attachment per posting so I will do some more immediately after this oen)

Same Issue with Studio 18 last patch 

By way of further information. I added a 2 minute scrolling title to my (approx) 60m project. With Quality at fastest playback; optimization threshold at 59; and render while play =off, it was possible to play the movie up to the point were the 2 minute title started. Then, the picture froze but the scrubber line continued and associated audio played. It took approx 120 minutes for the title section to be rendered (first yellow bar; then green bar).  I did have to use the PC with a couple of other programs at the same time but those were Word and gMail.. But 2 hours to render a 2 minute Title???!!!

I am at a loss. It doesn't take me anywhere near the amount of time to render anything (Preview: Balanced. Optimization 80), especially titles. 

I'll have Firefox and several other programs running and no problems. When rendering, the CPU cranks up a lot. I can hear the fan cooler kicking in. 

Have you stopped McAfee from running?

I've turned off as much as I believe I can including McAfee (having disconnected from the Internet).

 

PS17 requires the following:

BGRnd.exe*32          834,444K

NGStudio.exe*32      575,072K

RM.exe*32                30,240K

 

Total                        1.44GB

 

Thus:

1   Studio 17 requires 1.44GB of memory to function.

2   Even though I have a 64 bit PC, Studio is running in a 32 bit environment.

3  In that environment, there is a memory maximum of 4GB available.

4  The PC running with no other relevant programs (excluding those 3 above) open needs 0.22GB making a total of 1.66GB.

5  This leaves on 2.3GB available for "editing".

 

Is this enough?

Well, I was playing the movie and not doing any editing and the low memory message came up on screen.

That's 3.6GB. No wonder the message appears; there is only  0.4GB left to run the system.

I can not follow you. In your initial post you wrote you are running 64-bit OS an your system has 16GB of RAM. Why should there only be 0.4GB left for the system?

He's running 32bit PS17.

I've never come close to using that amount of system RAM with PS17. Even doing 1/2 hour project with AVCHD video in PS18, not even close to that. 

THIS video I did with multiple Montage with AVCHD footage and 18megapixel still images didn't exceed 990k when rendering.

NGStudio settled in while rendering at 491k. Max for BG Renderer was 1,100k, but often stayed between 300-500k.  The over 1gig for the BG Renderer was brief. Not enough to trigger anything errors at all.

When everything finished rendering, BG Renderer settled to 285k, NGStudio stayed at 491k.

My understanding is that while a 64-bit OS system has, in my case, 16GB Ram, running a 32-bit program will only allow access to 4 GB of RAM. I'm open to correction.

I don't think Tony understands much Polish either

There are many Montage and text effects that you can use for convenience.  After that it is down to your imagination in applying or changing settings to get the appearance you want. It is also a lot of hard work and time consuming.

 There does not appear to be a solution to my problem. I'm sitting here waiting for a (slightly)  amended credit list to render. BG Renderer is showing about 1GB; NGStudio about 0.5GB. Perhaps it's time to ditch PS and get another program such as Media Composer!!

Yeah... I understand basically nothing in Polish. Wife does the translating for me. I tell her what I want and she sends it to me in Polish.

I just wanted to show you a video where there were several streams of AVCHD video, motion titles (that's the titling editor I used), and motion HD background. Never had an issue with running out of memory on my computer (specs below). Never. That is why I was surprised with the amount of RAM being utilized on your computer. I'll have several other applications opened too (like Firefox).

If you want to read how PS16/17 is optimized for 64bit, here is the THREAD. As for Media Composer, I bypassed it when they offered it to us Avid Liquid users at a tremendously great price. The program was far more than what I was looking for and wanted to learn how to use. 

After seeing some of the work that others have done with Pinnacle, I saw "zero" need to go any further up the NLE ladder where subscription is becoming the norm. 

Have you run Nemo Check? It's in the Start>Programs folder for PS17.

Couple of points:

A Nemo check returns the message "Your system is fast and will perform well with 1080p HD video".

Mpingel suggests: To sum it up: I would recommend using a 64bit Windows with at least 4GB RAM (better 6GB) installed. My system is 64bit with 16 GB RAM.  Mpingel is addressing a PS16 issue whereas here,it's PS17. That advice does not appear top stand up in my case. Of course, I may have a misunderstanding? Is the solution for me to get PS18 Ultimate upgrade which is 64bit "optimized"? Any ideas on how could I be sure that getting PS18 upgrade will solve my problems?
