    MP4 files and Liquid 7.2

    Attachment: DMC-G6MP4vsAVCHD.JPG

I am considering purchasing a dslr camera and thought it might make sense to get one that records HD video in a file format that is compatible with Liquid since I still use Liquid for almost all HD and SD video editing.  The new Panasonic DMC-G6 mirrorless micro four thirds camera specs state that it records 1920 x 1080 and 1280 x 720 HD video in MP4 file format.  For you Liquid experts out there, will Liquid work natively with this MP4 file format (gray slices)?  Thanks for the help!

I just found the attached description for MP4 vs AVCHD recording format for this camera on the Panasonic website.  Does this mean that the MP4 recording format it uses is not AVCHD or AVC/H.264?

I don't think Liquid will be able to work with those MP4 files. I don't think Liquid supports H.264. You will probably have to transcode them to another format before importing into Liquid. If I recall correctly, Liquid stopped at H.263. While Liquid was a great editor, it is probably time to move on, especially if you are going to use file based cameras or else get a good conversion program to transcode to mpeg2. Liquid also does not support AVCHD.

Thanks Lew.  You are always on it!!  I did some more checking on this camera and found that the underlying MP4 compression is h.264 - RATS.

However, I did find a couple of file-based dslr cameras that should work given the HD file formats they record.  Namely the Pentax K-5 II and the Samsung Galaxy NX.  Both get relatively good reviews.  I tried sample footage from the Pentax on a Liquid timeline and it worked great - imported with gray slices!  Now I'm looking for some sample footage taken with the Galaxy NX.  If I find some, I will post on how it works with Liquid.
