I CONVERT THE CAMERA OUTPUT, 1920X1080 24mB, to MPEG2 1920x1080 at 30Mb for editing. For that I use V15, its converter is very high quality, BUT cannot batch convert, the individual files are joined. Re identifying the individual

    files is hit or miss.

When editing our various trips there may be as many as 2000 individual video shots (files).

I have been looking for some time for a good quality, fast converter that also allows a bit rate adjustment that can go to 30Mb or higher. Virtually all converters checked top at around 12 to 18 Mb.

Out of over 20 I found one that seemed to have all these attributes, made by XILISOFT, alas a widescreen 16x9 AVCHD conversion to MPEG2

results in a std video aspect ratio output regardless of any adjustments when used in V15.

Has anyone come across a high quality converter?

    Thanks for any input

Did you try PS15 automatic scene detection feature to split the joined file?

Re: Best AVCHD to MPEG2 CONVERTER ??

    Thanks for the reply.

Well that feature is the problem, the scene detection can be delayed by a frame or so. Then a different scene is shown in the album, containing the

    previous scene.

It is mainly a nuisance and wastes time, the extra delayed frame has to be removed, especially if the scenes are not edited in the sequence they were shot.

That is why I am looking for a batch converter, of the 20 or so I looked at, poor conversion quality is mostly the problem with free converters. Either a poor codec or ridiculous bitrates like

12Mb MAX for MPEG2 HD ! Paid for converters are usually better.

I have not checked if V16 would be a converter candidate. And can it batch convert individual files, like a few 100 at a time? What is its max ?

I shoot at 24Mb and will not reduce the data stream, there IS a reduction in quality when dropping to 18 Mb. That is why many commercial disks use 40 Mb.

And if a video stream is twice converted the bit rate will play a greater role in trying to maintain PQ.

(Sorry, my pet peewee getting restless)

    Thanks again Plemmens.

P.S., nice looking bike, I gave up biking, keep falling off, a tricycle would do it .

Re: Best AVCHD to MPEG2 CONVERTER ??

Yep, that o"ne frame off" when doing scene detection is a" thingy" I've experienced too.

PS 16 will not let you batch convert individual files.

Sorry but I don't use AVCHD footage so never needed to convert anything, reason I can't give you any meaningfull advice re a convertor.

    Anyone else?

Re: Best AVCHD to MPEG2 CONVERTER ??

Although I haven't tried it, Aunsoft comes highly recommended by some people, including Lew Schatzer (Avid MC Moderator) for converting AVCHD to MPEG-2 for easier editing.  I see by the feature list that it does batch conversions, but I don't know how well that works.

It is not expensive and there is a free trial available here:

Re: Best AVCHD to MPEG2 CONVERTER ??

Thank s VE7AXO for the pointer. Looks pretty good BUT there may be a flaw in V15 that I DID noticed before. When converting AVCHD to MPEG2 in an external program, not on V15, only the first file of a folder of videos shot in 16x9 is in that format shows as such in V15 all subsequent are 4x3.

Project settings etc make no difference. In the album I can set the aspect ratio on the first video, on the next ones the adjustment is greyed out. Media info says all are 16x9.

Had the same problem with the XILISOFT converter, it has some similarities to the AUNSOFT.

But ran a test with the 2010 ROXIO converter and no such problem, conversions work fine in V15.

Is it a converter or V15 problem?

Re: Best AVCHD to MPEG2 CONVERTER ??

This could be the old import problem where because the files haven't been propoerly imported, there is no scn file and therefor S15 has nowhere to store the aspect ratio infomation. Highlight a 4:3 file, switch to Scene view and the aspect rratio choice may cease to be greyed out.

Re: Best AVCHD to MPEG2 CONVERTER ??

jjn, I did   what you suggested, it did not make any difference. Was afraid of that, since a conversion using Roxio works just fine. Except it takes nearly forever and the bit rate drops depending on how many conversions are in a batch.

So the problem points to the two conversion programs.

Too bad since both of those converters allowed a lot of tweaking, did a clean conversion and were reasonably priced.

Have to put my specs back on and keep looking for that"elusive scarlet Pimpernell", sorry, I meant conversion software.

    Hope there is some help.

Re: Best AVCHD to MPEG2 CONVERTER ??

I have Imtoo Video Converter.  Same as Xili just a different company.

It is an issue with auto scene detection when doing AVCHD to HD MPG2 format (I am using Studion Ultimate 12.1).  When I did AVCHD to SD widescreen I had no issues.  My solution is to either let scene detection finish or convert to HD MP4.  Aspect ratio is detect fine without scene detection.

For me for home use there is no noticable quality loss.  Of course I am not and audophile or videophile so it looks fine to me.

Re: Best AVCHD to MPEG2 CONVERTER ??

I may well be missing the point here but why not put your avchd files into the timeline of whichever PS you use and at the 'join' just drop a 10 or 20 second title perhaps with a description of the scenes that follow and then convert ?

Re: Best AVCHD to MPEG2 CONVERTER ??

If you need a AVCHD to MPEG-2 Converter, I can recommend one- Brorsoft MTS/M2TS Converter for Mac. I used the app to transcode my Sony AVCHD footage to Adobe Premiere Pro on my Windows PC. Well, it can help you convert your mts files to mpeg-2 as you want for Pinnacle Studio with easy editing.

I don't think suggesting a Mac software for a Windows user is a good advice.

Yes I know it might be. But like Canada Dry's old advertisement, it's colored like alcohol, it smells like alcohol, but it might be no alcohol. Who knows ?
