    Problems and crashes

I've been testing Avid Studio all night. I'm really jazzed about the features and capabilities but I ran into several issues. A couple make the product unuseable until they're fixed. I tried to access Avid support but couldn't find a section for Avid Studio. I've tested with various types of files and photos including AVCHD, Flip video files, photos. Here's my list so far:

    1. Right click on clip, select "Adjust duration", program hangs
    2. Select "Export" and program stays busy until I cancel - never making it to the export module.
    3. Selecting certain disc menus to preview hangs Studio. (Winter Holidays).
    4. Selecting "Source" tab/window hangs Studio.
    5. Hangs after trying to save changes to project settings, watch folders, etc.
    6. Crash when trying to scan folder containing Flip videos.
    7. Repeated hangs when scanning folders for import (Flip videos - hangs after importing 2222 files)
    8. Exiting after cancelling import leaves Studio process still running - have to kill it from task manager.

    Re: Problems and crashes

I have not seen any of this. On my system the program is extremely stable. The only time it crashed was the first time I used the titler and I have not been able to duplicate that. So, asking the usual questions:

    1. Are you running a clean install of Windows?

    2. Are all your drivers, particuarly your video driver updated?

    3. Are you running anti-virus software?

    4. What else is running on that system?

    Re: Problems and crashes

Yep, it's a clean install of Windows 7 that I've been using for several months. Everything is up to date. I've been using Studio 14 successfully all along. I also have Adobe Lightroom, Premere Pro CS5.

    Re: Problems and crashes

So, it is not a clean install of Windows. You are running at least two other NLE's on it?? Is that correct?? Have you read through the troubleshooting section of the manual?

    Re: Problems and crashes

I guess it depends on how you define a clean install of Windows. I started with a brand new system with a bare drive and installed Windows 7 on it. I then installed Studio 14, Premiere and Lightroom. I've been using the system since December 2010 with no problems in any of the apps.

Are there known issues with Avid Studio co-existing with other NLEs? I can't even save changes to project settings so I don't suspect that's due to the existence of other software. Anything I can check?

    Re: Problems and crashes

There may or may not be issues with other software. This is a brand new product. However, it sounds like either a bad install or something is not right on your system as several of us have been running the product for about two weeks and have not seen these issues. I would first try uninstalling and reinstall it and see if that fixes it. It could also be a corruption in your download. It might pay to download it again and do a new install from another download.

    Re: Problems and crashes

Thanks, I'll reinstall. It's almost like it can't launch the next process at times - i.e. export - and is waiting for a response. But even after an hour it was still busy.

are your system specs description up to date ???

if not (they don't seem to be) make them current -- it would help us understand better whats going on

    Re: Problems and crashes

One problem I have found so far is with Scorefitter, when rendering a 10, 30 second or 3 minute song it just sits there and does nothing, I never had this problem with studio 12 or 14. The same is for the Sonicfire plugin, sonicfire opens, you create your song, send it to avid studio, play the song within studio then it starts to render and just sits there.

    Re: Problems and crashes

I can't reproduce this, it works fine. Whether I just drag a song from the library and stick it on a track and set my length or do it in the Scorefitter dialog box, once on the timeline and hit play, a box comes up to show render progress and then the clip works fine after rendering. Sounds like something on your system is conflicting. Possibly earlier versions of the Scorefitter app??

On what systems?  Clean?  Other NLEs present?  Installation as upgrade or new?  Installation by download or disc?

jsheldon's system is almost new, and one would think that AS be designed not to clash with Pinnacle Studio 14.  Anyway, the outcome of re-installation will be interesting to know.

    Hi Lew,

Yes I do have Studio 14 on my system. I did try the S15 demo with scorefitter and the sonicfire plug-in and that worked perfectly and was very fast.

I wonder what could be the problem and is anyone else having the same problem?

    Re: Problems and crashes

I uninstalled/reinstalled and still the same problems. I loaded the demo project. Then opened the control panel. Then pressed 'ok' without having made any changes. As before, AS gives me the busy circle icon and I eventually have to kill it from task manager.

Same thing when I select the 'Export' tab.

The installer went through the steps appearing to have worked correctly.

     Any ideas?

    Hi Jim,

I am wondering if it is your NVIDIA GeForce 9400 GT 512mb Video Card, it may not be powerful enough.

I am using the NVIDIA GeForce 9800 GT 1000mb Video Card, so far AV is running a bit slow but it is working Okay.

The processer I am using is the Intel Core 2 Duo E7400. 2.80GHz. And I am using Windows 7 32bit.

    Re: Problems and crashes

I don't have that one anymore. Are my current specs below not showing up?

    Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
    Intel Core i7 950 3.07 GHz 12GB RAM
    Asus Sabertooth X58 Mobo
NVIDIA GeForce GT 450 1GB Video Card (Asus)

1 Seagate Barracuda 1.5TB SATA drive
    1 Seagate 2TB drive

This system breezes through rendering AVCHD when I'm using Premiere Pro CS5.

    Re: Problems and crashes

You're sure it isn't busy updating watchfolder content?

If there are many files in folders to watch it can take very long for that proces to finish and it might be possible that this process temporary delays other tasks.

You could also try to change settings in control panel to have no folders watched.

Yes sorry Jim I was looking at your profile and not below. Your PC should be wizzing along.

Adobe Premiere Pro CS5 uses a scratch disk to give you extra RAM.

I agree. This watchfolder stuff can give a very poor opening impression of AvSo. I can see how useful it can be, but it can really hog the CPU - particularly when it finds files with issues.

    Re: Problems and crashes

It appears to be watchfolder related. I tried removing watchfolders in the control panel but it would hang. So I reinstalled and at the initial setup turned off watchfolders.

I was then able to access the export tab as well as save changes in the control panel. I then used import  - scan for media - to bring in a large number of videos, photos, mp3 files.

Apparently the same background process that handles watchfolder tasks has to be freed-up to allow other aspects of AS to function. I have several thousand video clips. However, it still stops importing after 2222 files (Flip 720p mp4) out of a total of 4991 files in the directory.

    Re: Problems and crashes

    Hi Jim,

I made a watch folder on my desktop, I named it ‘Avid Studio Watch Folder’ inside that I put sub folders: Audio, Photos and Videos. I then deleted all the watch folders in the control panel. That made a hell of a difference.

All I see now is what is in those folders.

    Re: Problems and crashes

There shouldnt be any problems running it with S14 or S15 on the system. I had all three installed durring testing a lot of the time.
