Son of Show your Liquid Stuff...

One of the most popular threads on the old Avid forum was Show your Liquid stuff. That thread had almost two million views. So, knowing a good thing when we see it, let's do it again. Post you latest, greatest Liquid creations here for the world to see. You will need a server to link to as before. Let the posts begin....

Re: Son of Show your Liquid Stuff...

I wonder if the Avid Video Exchange would also still be available for Liquid users.  It wouldn't be the same as having comments in one thread like they were but comments can be added for individual videos there.  That would actually make it easier to follow the comments.  And, as with the old thread, the video could be uploaded to the Exchange and a link posted with comments here.

I've asked Pif if that would be OK.  I'll post back when I have an answer.

Excellent idea. Keep us posted. I would like to find an easy way for Liquid users to post their work and put it in one place on this forum for all to see.

    Here's what I do...

Well, I've been kicking around the Liquid and Avid forums for some time and I suppose it is about time I showed what I do.  It is part of a promo I am doing for our sixth form (High School college for my US friends) It is not finished so this is the first 55 seconds.

I've uploaded on the Avid exchange (WMV - although the original file is 16:9 it plays 4:3 - not sure how to change that)

    BRGS Promo

    Please be gentle....!!

    Re: Here's what I do...

I thought it was very good - nice effects and pace. However.... 60 seconds of that same hard beating music repeating over and over was a bit too much for me. Personally I would try to soften it a bit and make it a bit more intestesing sound wise.

    Re: Here's what I do...

Thanks Dave, The target audience is students aged 16, so the music has to be upbeat and similar to what they are listening to; however I do agree! (You try editing it!).  It is difficult to find exciting contemporary upbeat and varied music that I can get a licence to.  After the first minute that track does vary...honest!  I may not stick with it but any change will affect the timing of various aspects of the final video.

    Re: Here's what I do...

I liked it, opening was good, what did you make titles in? Maybe it needs some audio of kids mixed with music.

    Re: Here's what I do...

Yes, it runs for a couple of minutes as you see, and then cuts to soundbites from several of the students.  (I'm actually updating a previous project with new footage)  Depending on how harsh the criticism for the opening is (!) I may dare to show the final product!

(Added:  Titles were a graphic imported as a PNG and animated using 2D editor)

Is there somewhere to upload your clips here like there was over there on Avid?

Not yet. I guess you could still post on the Avid forum and put a link here until something better comes along.

David, I like the video you put into the frames.  Caught me by surprise!

    Re: Here's what I do...

Thanks Tim, that was sort of the idea.  Took me ages though, and far from perfect without motion tracking.  Interestingly I tried it running into each frame but it looked better (and more accurate) running out of each frame.

Morriss I like that video. Love the way you trans to different scenes. Did you start your shot on that book and pull out with the camera or did you use 2d edit?

    Re: Here's what I do...

Going back to the question of one thread for each video - what's the problem ? just start a new post with a pointer to your work and let the compliments - eh - comments begin !

I actually suggested one forum dedicated just to this - but it's just as easy to put something in the subject line such as "COMMENTS"

    Re: Here's what I do...

Mike: I used a green piece of card, put it on the folder, took the shot and then used the 3D editor with the first frame of the second shot.  Using the green card meant that the picture had some lighting and the fx shot was framed right.  It was really awkward trying to key frame the fx (motion tracking would have been nice!).  What I would have liked was a tool to drag each corner of the picture into any 4 sided shape to follow the 3D shape of the folder (if that makes sense)

Played a little with Mercali, Heroglyph and Vitascene this evening as well as dynamic timewarp and some 2D editors, the clip is not fused any time when editing, just made it right out from Liquid.

And, it is hd of course, 1 min 40 secs appr 9 mbps, have patience when downloading if you are situated far from the server.

    tomas,

great scenery, good music. A am not sure about the titles, too flashy for the content + smth wrong with font proportions, too tall maybe. Bad camera shake, zooms and pans are too fast, wich makes it look amateurish. Use a good tripod ;-)

    Re: Here's what I do...

Hi L, I completely agree,or, as Lew said, "the worst title I have seen"

However, this wasn´t (so much) about nice viewing, I have, in this shorty::

started with a dynamic timewarp with a mercali filter on it

on the layer above, I have a tdk pro clip with Heroglyph applied, using 2D Cpu editor on that

Then comes a clip with mercali and 2D Cpu editor

After that 3 clips with 2D Cpu editor and a Vitascene transition between them

Then comes a clip with mercali and 2d Cpu editor, even using the lowpass filter in the editor.

After that, one more clip with the Cpu editor, followed by a transition.

After that, a clean clip followed by a snapshot with Heroglyph and the 2D Cpu editor added.

After that, I throw a smart sound clip at track 1.

The last thing I did was to add a Vitascene effect, film look, on the header of the videotrack and let the whole thing render, yes, it actually did, I didn´t fuse it when I was making this little test.

And, as I said, it is hdv 2 media.

Edited later. And I forgot, the last thing I did was to render to an uncompressed hd timeline, the mediafile is made from that timeline.

I hope you can take some constructive criticism. Good video production starts with good camera work. The video was horribly shaky to the point of being difficult to watch. The zooming and panning was much too fast and herky-jerky. The lighting was quite off as well, the foreground being too dark, and the background being overblown. I also agree with the comments about the titling being too harsh as well. As for scene cuts I think there is reason almost all TV, and Movies use simple cuts without any fancy effects, it looks most professional. At the end you froze the shoot and it looked really clear, but that kind of stability is what one should aim for throughout the shot.

I think the most important piece of equipment in the toolkit outside the camera itself is a really good tripod. The Mercalli may provide some really good results but this proves that one stills needs to provide a stable platform to shoot the images from. A smooth pan head that provides some level of resistance can also lead to better quality panning but there is also a level of experience required as well. One thing I have learned is when I thought I was panning slow enough, I really wasn't.

    Re: Here's what I do...

For those of you that are interested in that vitascene transition, you can download this part of my clip (ordinary hd, not uncompressed)

Add it on a hdv PAL timeline and notice that the outgoing clip is moved to the sides together with the borders of the transition at the end of the transition

This wasn´t able to download it seems, the format isn´t supported over the net, sorry, PM me if you are interested.

If you read some more post you will see that this was an editing and filters test, I like to test editing, far more fun than to write about it.

Practise a little with the filters yourself and show us some of your work, with hd and from an uncompressed timeline of course, the filters are available as demo versions on the prodad site.

Looking forward to see some of those test clips from you and I promise to not complain over bad light or shaky hands, more interested in how you edit the effects and how the rendering  works on your machine.

I guess you posted your comments to the wrong thread then. This one is for "show your stuff" and people were evaluating based on that assumption. Technical discussions belong in a different sub-forum.

    Re: Here's what I do...

    Hi Mike

    Nice promo piece.  I like the way you've timed the movie clips to the music.  Also thought you had executed some nice camera work.  A couple of things struck me watching the piece;

You have a pretty romantic / dreamy style - I feel that the pace of the music is at odds with the visual style.  Personally I think a much slower song (something like "power of love" or "a case of you") would really compliment your visual style.

I imagine that this is a showreel?  So you have probable chosen your shots for effect.  IMO there is way to much use of the dutch tilt and way too much movement in the shots.  I honestly found myself starting to experience motion sickness towards the end.

Otherwise, very nice work.  I bet your customers love you.

    A football music video?

We always have youtube for showing stuff:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wlkIPSsJUZU

That's a Music video for footballfans. The team from my hometown, Bergen, Western Norway won the league for the first time since 1963. Basically 250.000  persons are going crazy for the triumph, and I made the video for a remake of a punk classic. It is supposed to be rough, and I think it is. Most of it was shot handheld with a DVCAM PD10P at utomatic. More or less no xtra lights were used. Yes, it was a low budget production.

The celebrated team is "Brann". That's Fire in English. The anthem of the song suggest that we should put whole world on Fire.
