    Hard Drive Clean-up

I claim this is relevant because we are all in a constant battle with space on the mother hard drive:

My internal drive has a capacity of 288 gigs and says I've used 256. This from "properties" of template C. Recovery D allots 12 gigs, with 9 used.

When I add up everything in C--app data, desktop, documents, music, pictures, videos (115 gigs) and so on, I come to about 165 gigs.

    165 in C plus12 for D = 177 gigs accounted for.

Any suggestions where to look for the missing 100-plus gigs?

Obviously I'm missing something big here.

    Thanks

    Christian

It sounds as if you have only one physical drive in your computer.  If that is the case, it could be the source of this and possibly other problems.  Your profile does not mention the drive arrangement.  Could you please clarify where you keep the imported media, audio files and render files?

    Re: Hard Drive Clean-up

Have you run DiskCleanup? found under Programs / Accessories / System Tools?

For Internet Exploere have you allowed it to default the space for temporary files. Look at Tools/ Internet Options / Browsing History / "Space to Use" (I recommend 25mb).

Vista also uses a lot of space for System Restore files. I would not adjust that setting except as last resort.

You might want to consider purchasing an external drive. They are cheap and reliable.

    Regards, Rick

Have you tried deleting all auxiliary files?  Even after you delete the aux. files, I think Studio still keeps a lot of junk in a folder called Render.  In XP, you can find it (for Studio 12) at C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Studio 12\Data\Render.

I'll follow all these suggestions and report. I have a couple of 500 gig externals drives I archive to every few months, the issue is keeping the 300 gig internal hard drive from junking up in th emeantime.

    Re: Hard Drive Clean-up

I downloaded a free trial of a program called TreeSize. It identifies in various graphic and list formats everything on your computer, and really is an eye-opener. And quite elegant.

A view of my tree is here: http://picasaweb.google.com/cwinlosang/Computer?feat=directlink

It appears that I have 118 gigs of video (upper tree screenshot). I recognize everything. Soon I'll be able to delete much of  the files related to the large project called All EMC video.

However, in the other screenshot, note 53 gigs in Studio 12 Render.

Hmmmm. Can I delete that? It certainly would explain the "missing" space on my on my internal drive.

    Thanks for taking the time.
