How can I fix "hollow" sound from clip shot with consumer cam?

    Hi all

I have a roughly 2 minute clip shot with a cheap consumer DV cam (a sony TRV22e) in a small room of about 3.5m by about 4m with the subject being about 2m away from the camera(and obvsiously the microphone). The picture is more or less perfect, however the sound sounds "hollow" asif an empty room (I'm geussing due to no special microphone used). Anyway is it possible to fix this inside Liquid 7.2, and how would I go about doing it? A rough guide or some pointers could be very useful (I rarely need to rely on the sound from clips and even in sound in general, so not very clued up in this area)

    I appreciate your help.

    Regards,

    Morne

Liquid can load and use many VSTs (audio plug-ins, many freely available) so there is no shortage of audio filters and effects. What you generally have with consumer camcorder microphones is a fairly limited range with a pronounced drop off at the low end. Try just adding one of the built-in equalizers (I suggest the standard Real Time Equalizer filter; it's the easiest one to use if your not familiar with sound processing). Start with the Vocal preset. That alone might be close enough to get what you want. If not, try increasing the mid-range and the low range (from 250hz up) and see if that fills in the sound better. If not then you'll have to do a bit of searching on the web for a VST to help.

    Good luck.

Re: How can I fix "hollow" sound from clip shot with consumer cam?

    Thanks Dave

That gave me moderate results. I also have another problem. On a different clip there seems to be some kind of humming noise from a fridge motor or maybe an aircon. I'm trying to remove that noise but nothing seems to work as expected. The standard realtime "noise reduction" makes the person speaking sound like a robot or something in a spaceship in the future which is in itself a pretty cool effect - but not very good for current requiremtns of taking away the humming sound. I tried the VST plugins you suggested and ened up settling for the "floorfish", "blockfish", and "spitfish" plugins (which are all just dll files). The floorfish seems to be the one I need. Anyway after installing it into my folder "C:\Program Files (x86)\Avid\Avid Liquid 7\PlugIns\VST" I closed Liquid and restarted it. But now I'm at a loss of where to find the plugins in liquid. They don't appear in my audio list of effects.

So basically I have 2 questions:

    1. How can I take away the humming?

    2. Where do I locate the VST plugins once installed?

    Regards,

    Morne

OK I found where the plugins are hiding, now if somebody could just point me in the right direction to reduce the humming noise?

Audacity has a noise reduction filter which is fairly good have you tried it yet? Do a Google search if you don't have it and its a freeware open source. There are tutorials online (again Google  them)that can help get you started....Edd

Re: How can I fix "hollow" sound from clip shot with consumer cam?

You'll find that the noise reduction filter in Audacity, which is better than the one in Liquid, still produces flanging on the remaining audio. A big part of the problem is that the kind of noise you get from a refrigerator spans a wide range of frequencies, many of them right in the middle of the vocal range. There are better tools out there for removing noise (the NR filter that now comes with Sony Sound Forge, SoundSoap from Bias Inc., and others.

To try and remove the noise in Liquid, I'd suggest using notch filters. The LiquidEQ filter is really good for this. You can isolate specific frequencies with precision. You might want to look at the audio tutorial I wrote several years back:  Audio Course.pdf

    Hope this helps.

I have had the same problem with "hollow" sounding audio. For some reason I decided it was due to the low quality stereo mics. I made the audio mono and it helped a lot. What was your solution finally?
