OT: ID3 tags when burning CDs

OK--Not video editing, but media creation so I guess this fits just a bit.

In addition to video and PowerPoint production, I have been doing some audio work for a Home Based Education curriculum company.  Recently, I completed 2 CDs with up to 80 tracks of lessons for students.  After assembling the recordings, I burn the master, which is sent off to a company for duplication, printing & packaging.  The recordings are MP3s and I have edited the ID3 tag information with Authoring information, and I can see the information when looking at the MP3 Properties in Windows.  When I burn the MP3s to the CD as a music or audio CD (meaning that they are translated to .CDA files) the ID3 tag information is not carried to the CD.  I know this can be done as I have CDs from which you can see the ID3 tags.

Everything is from an Unknown Disk and labeled Track 1, Track 2 and etc, instead of the name of the CD and the actual label of the track.

I have tried Audition, Nero 8 Burning ROM and Nero 8 Express, and even burned them from a WMP Burn List.  I have searched the Internet for answers and while I can tell you lots about ID3 tags themselves, I have found nothing that has helped.

I have gone into WMP and turned off all options that allow the information to be refreshed (replaced) with album data from the Internet as the discs do not appear in any on-line database yet.

    Any ideas?

Re: OT: ID3 tags when burning CDs

I've never heard of a cda file that contained ID3 tag info. But I have heard of CD players that can play a CD with MP3's on them.

You might want to look at some of those CD's and see if they have cda files or mp3 files.

Also check to see if the mp3's have ID3v1 or ID3v2 tags.  I know, for example, that irfanview only displays ID3v1 tags so if there's ID3v2 info I couldn't tell by looking at the tag info.

Also, don't be fooled into thinking that the CD itself contains the info that your computer downloads from e.g. Gracenote's CDDB.

Back in the day, the CDDB was user-driven -- that is, if you had a disc that didn't "exist" in the system, you could submit the info yourself.   Now, it's a commercial venture, and pretty much locked down.  freedb.org should probably still let you add your own discs to the database -- that is, assuming that your discs come back with a unique-enough discid.

ID3 tags have to be added when you create the MP3. What software did you use to make the actual MP3 files?

Re: OT: ID3 tags when burning CDs

    Thanks all.

Dave, I used a very capable program named MP3TAG.

I am following the ID3v2 standard, which according to http://www.id3.org/ the information is stored with the MP3 file.  And while I understand that I am burning a CD from MP3 files, I have read that the CDs can keep the information if the hardware and burning software all support a feature called CD TEXT.  I am burning with Sony Drives, and Nero 8 both supports CD TEXT and reports that my drives do too.

I do understand the role that Gracenote plays, and I have not submitted the CDs to them (although they do refer to software that will do it for you).  What confuses me is the role of CD TEXT and the fact that I have CDs that someone else compiled in a previous iteration of the work that I am doing, and the artist and track titles all show up in WMP--and I know it has not been submitted to any database.  Indeed, I have turned off all such access to the Internet for WMP as I read in a forum that the local data will be overwritten by data from the Internet if not disabled.

Thanks for helping.  I'm still seeking an answer though.  AAAARRRRGGHHHHHH

Re: OT: ID3 tags when burning CDs

OK, I see what you're trying to do. On my system, Nero does propagate the ID3 tag metadata into the CD TEXT metadata when I add an MP3 with ID3 tags for an audio CD.

Just for a sanity check, start authoring the disk, and in the track list right-click on one of your added tracks and look at the track property. Make sure it actually filled in the CD TEXT fields for that track.

And probably a really dumb question, but did you remember to enable CD TEXT for the audio CD?
