How to capture from Live camera in Studio 14 ?

    Hello!

One of my machines, I installed Studio 14 Ultimate Collection, and was trying to capture live from mý Canon MX II, without any DV-tape in "Import section" of Studio 14? ( Free running) I´m using that DV- camera to catch every frame from a Super-8/Regular 8 telecine machine.
In earlier versions Like Studio 12 and so on, there was no problem with a free running camera? Any ide someone in this forum how to make it work?

    Thanx

What happens when you try to do this? Do you get any error messages?

Re: How to capture from Live camera in Studio 14 ?

    Hello again!

yes, I get error messeage as follows: Importer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the convenince

And then I can read some description of the problem:
    Importer EventType: clr20r3
    P1: importer.exe
    P2. 14.01.1056
    P3: 4a8609bd
    P4: presentationcore
    P5: 3.0.0.0
    P6: 488f140b
    P8: 0
    P9: system.notsupportedexception

At the same time when I´m inside the "Importer" section (S-14), the mouse cursor moves very unsmothley? (hacking)
After this messeage procedure clicking and sending it to Microsoft, Studio will return to "Edit" section and all is normal again including the mouse behavior.

Uninstalling all versions of Studio including S-14 makes no differents. This behavior shows up on both my computers. The oldest is AMD 64 3000+ with 2 Gb RAM and the other one AMD 3800 dual core with 2 Gb RAM.
One computer with Radeon X1600/1650 graphics, the other one with Radeon x13oo/1550
    Turning off virusprotection (F-secure ) does´nt help.
In all other cases/programs etc the computers works great.

Studio 12.1 works great on both machines.
My version of Studio 14 is for the Nordic/Scandinavian language and use Swedish version of Windows XP SP3.NET Framework is installed as required.
    Can´t figure out what´s wrong....Any suggestions?
    Thanx!

Re: How to capture from Live camera in Studio 14 ?

Try this. Close down Studio, run the Importer.exe on its own (You'll find it in C:\Program Files\Pinnacle\Studio 14\Import\programs) then try to run the capture there. See if you get better results.

Re: How to capture from Live camera in Studio 14 ?

    Hello Marc.., now I´m back...
Yes, i found import.exe and did as you told me to do. The results shows up like before...jerky movements of the mouse, so it takes some time to do any selections of folders etc. Then I press start Capture  and "import" crash and I get the same messeage as usual.

To import from my Canon DV XM II I´m using Firewire via the old capture card Pinnacle Studio AV/DV. ( It´s still a very good card ) But I don´t think that should have something to do with this problem? Works great in all other versions of Studio.
    What to do next?

Re: How to capture from Live camera in Studio 14 ?

I'm thinking of hardware hiccups at this point. Does your previous Studio version work smoother than that of 14?

Re: How to capture from Live camera in Studio 14 ?

Yes, my previous Studio version work smoother than that of 14 on both my computers. The problem comes up when I start "Importer.exe".
Edit, Make Move etc works in S 14.

Re: How to capture from Live camera in Studio 14 ?

Something to try -- quick and cheap (free, actually):

Download WinDV and open it.  Make sure the filetype is Type 2 AVI.  You can mess around with the maximum filesize (you can set WinDV to capture individual files per scene, files of fixed size, or one-big-file by tweaking the discontinuity threshold - 0 for one-big-file, and the maximum filesize).

If that utility can successfully capture, then 1) you have a workaround, and 2) you can POSSIBLY point to a problem (or at least a regression) in the S14 importer.   Maybe.

Does WinDV work the same as AMCAP?

Re: How to capture from Live camera in Studio 14 ?

    Thanx Bittman and Marc!

I have just tried WinDV and also AMcap, and works without any problem, and as I told earlier also Studio 10, 11 and 12 Capture works great.
(Now I have Studio 12.1 installed besides Studio 14. It can coexist at same time.)
    Something is mystic with importer.exe......
Regarding to the error messeage last line:

    Importer EventType: clr20r3
    P1: importer.exe
    P2. 14.01.1056
    P3: 4a8609bd
    P4: presentationcore
    P5: 3.0.0.0
    P6: 488f140b
    P8: 0
    P9: system.notsupportedexception

If I search on internet for this line, (P9 ) I will found that it may be has to do with NET.Framework? Some script problem... Pinnacle Studio requires .NET Framework and latest version of Framwork is installed. I don´t know what Pinnacle Studio needs NET Framework for, and how it works, but something tells me that importer.exe and NET.Framework has something together. Hard to explain in English, but hope You understand what I mean?
Error report is also sent to Microsoft....

    trying to capture live
I tested a live capture with my S14 computer, and it did in fact work. Didn't see any comments such as this, so I thought it might be worth posting.

Does your computer have a built in firewire port? If you do, can you try and bypass the Av/Dv and try to use the camera directly with it?

Re: How to capture from Live camera in Studio 14 ?

hey, listen...i went back to my oldest computer again with same issue and made a new install again (after uninstalling of course ) of Studio 14.
At this time I made one thing different during the installing process:

For some reason in our countries/language the folder C:/Program Files does´nt excist. It is named "Program" only and Pinnacle just suggest C:/Program as installing path here. (Swedish Version of XP )This time I change, and created the english variant of the folder and named it Program Files and let Pinnacle Studio 14 to be installed at that path instead, and now import.exe works great!!!!!

I will now uninstall Studio 14 on my next machine and reinstall and see if that solution works even there.

Now THAT is interesting...I'll bet this one gets somebody's attention, if your suspicions turn out to be correct.

Re: How to capture from Live camera in Studio 14 ?

Sorry...My suspicions did not turn out to be correct. my issue is back again.....On both my computers.
At first I thought that I had found the problem.....

I start import.exe by it self, as suggestion from Marc and have a look at task manager. The CPU shows about 75-85% when I move the mouse inside the program and moves very jerky like the first time I wrote about this behavior here in this forum.
As soon as I close down Importer, everything is normal on both machines I don´t know how to solve this problem. There is no preview on both machines. Even if I disconnect my Camera from Firewire, it is the same problem on both machines with jerky movements by mouse..
I can´t understand this behavior on two unequal computers? I don´t have any other problems with them at all?
Studo 12.1 works great without any problems on both machines.

Re: How to capture from Live camera in Studio 14 ?

After many hours and lot of swearing, I decide to clean up and format C:/ and reinstall Windows XP SP3 with all updates, motherboard drivers, Soundcard, latest Net.Framework, Anti-virus F-Secure 2010 and so on. Then I reinstall Studio 12.1 with all previos Bonus DVD etc Works great. Then I install Studio 14 Ultimate Collection again and all seems to be working great now! So I don´t know what was wrong with the system before. I will now proceed with other programs, one by one as I had  installed before the problems on the machines and still have a look of Studio 14 after each one to see if that behavior with Importer.exe will come back.
If so, I will report that. Thanx!

What's odd is that both computers have this problem. Do you have the same programs on both computers?

Re: How to capture from Live camera in Studio 14 ?

No, I don´t have same programs of both machines, except for Studio, and F-secure 2010. Win XP Home edition on AMD 3800 Dual Core, and Win XP Professional on AMD Athlon 64 3000+.
All Win XP updates is all the same of course.

Also the graphic drivers are ATI Radeon on both machines with Catalyst controll Center.
Soundcards, Graphic card (allmost ), type of memory, harddrives motherboard are all different.
My capture cards on my computers are Pinnacle AV/DV Type 1, and Pinnacle AV/DV Type 2.

Re: How to capture from Live camera in Studio 14 ?

I have the exact same problem.

I run a near new PC with updated video and sound cards, latest codecs direct x, Win XP Pro SP3, latest net framework. My machine is quad 28mhz 3.2GB Ram. Top video card Geoforce.

I ran V14 on my Vista laptop and it captures perfectly. I suspect the issue is therefore incompatibility with Win XP and some obscure video interface code that has a conflict.

Avid support have sent me through 4 days of tweaking so far without success.
