Problem installing Pinnacle 10 to upgraded computer
My wife and added a nearly-new computer to our media lab. Her father built it so I can give you general specs (and can eventually answer more detailed questions)
Briefly, it has 4 gigs of RAM, a dual core processor, and at least 28 gigs of space available for installing it. The target drive is linked in a RAID connection with another hard drive.
We can install the first disk. When we get the dialog box that tells us to insert disk 2 (with the file data3.cab), it stalls once either of us presses any button (Browse, OK, Cancel). The odd part is that I've successfully installed the application several times on my smaller computer.
Any ideas, pointers, or suggestions?
As always, thanks in advance.

Are you able to install Studio 10 after this prompt comes up?

Nope. On the new one this is where it locks up tightly, and I don't want to experiment with the smaller computer yet. Bill

Re: Problem installing Pinnacle 10 to upgraded computer
When we get the dialog box that tells us to insert disk 2 (with the file data3.cab),
Then presumably you have either S10.0, S10.1 or S10.5 (3 Disk Versions. 2 Prog Cds & 1 Content DVD) & not S10.6 (2 Disk Version. 1 Prog DVD & 1 Content DVD). it stalls once either of us presses any button (Browse, OK, Cancel).
IMO, that's what would happen, if you did either of those (Apart from OK. However that will disappear anyway, once Studio reads Disk 2). Just Insert CD 2 when requested to do-so & nothing-else, untill requested to Insert Content DVD.

Yup. The discs are marked simply "version 10". We have the patches we'll eventually use. So then it sounds as if the trick is simply to insert CD 2, then check periodically until it's done. The insert the Bonus DVD. Right? Thanks! Bill

When Disk 2's Installed, Disk will be ejected & you're prompred to Insert Disk 3. We have the patches we'll eventually use.
The only Patch you need is S10.7 for XP or S10.8 for Vista. Both those Patches include all previous Patches.

Re: Problem installing Pinnacle 10 to upgraded computer
It sounds like Color has got it right about ignoring the message, IIRC you simply continue on with the installation.
I vaguely remember a window that appears during the S10 installation. I always found it odd that I simply ignored it , and somehow got a good install.
I think that MarcP might suggest installing it in safe mode. This might work if all else fails.

It sat all night without installing the contents of Disk 2, so we're still in limbo. (We have the 10.7 patch but haven't gotten far enough to install that.) Safe mode might be the next way to try. There may be some remaining issues with various settings in the computer. My wife's father built it from components he bought; he designed it as a graphics unit for his business (and he's very adept at this). Cheryl (Mrs. Bill) has located a number of settings to change so we could use it in a less specialized environment, and this may be a reflection of another change or to to locate and make. It's an adventure worth pursuing -- we still continue to be impressed by 10.7, and look forward to using it on a better computer. Later. Thanks! Bill

I would hope to think that was plenty of time.
I'm not the real computer guru, but something it sitting in my mind. I've read here that some people have problems installing on a network drive. Maybe your raid configuration is having the same effect.

.................And, if that doesn't work - IMO, since Disk 1 Installs OK & Disk 2 doesn't, then may be Disk 2 should be inspected for any smudges or superficial scratdhes that are preventing it from being read.
BTW - Since Disk 1 Installs OK, I wouldn't have thought it is due to a "Settings" mis-configuration, whatever thet would be. More likely a Driver conflict. Hence the suggestion to Install in "Safe Mode", when Windows only Runs Drivers for basic PC function. That being said, IMO, Disk 2 has no Installer anyway & is just a continuation of S10 Setup. Whereas Disk 3 has it's own Installer & can be Installed at a later time (If you wish)..

Re: Problem installing Pinnacle 10 to upgraded computer
I turned the problem over to my wife (who's very adept with computers, trouble-shooting, and so on). She harvested ideas from several threads, and here's the story of her success:
here is the list of steps I took to get Pinnacle Studio 10.7 up and running on the new computer:
- First, to correct the problem of freezing on install: Tried to uninstall the software but no uninstaller was installed, and the install disc didn't offer the option either.
- So I deleted the Pinnacle files in the Program directory.
- Downloaded RegDelete for Studio 10, ran it 3 times, defragmented the hard drive per forum instructions.
- Copied the contents of installer discs to the hard drive.
- Restarted computer in Safe mode (F8).
- Reinstalled Studio 10 from hard drive copy of installer.
- After this, I could launch the program, and I entered the various activation keys. But Studio wouldn't capture anything. I could switch to the Capture tab, open Capture settings and change settings, but as soon as I clicked OK to close the Capture Settings dialog, the system froze.
- So now that I had an uninstall option, I uninstalled Studio 10 using the uninstaller, hoping that the more graceful approach would clear up the remaining difficulty with capturing.
- Then I repeated the steps above for reinstalling the software (RegDelete, Safe mode, install from hard drive).
- Then I copied the installers for the upgrades to Studio 10.5 and 10.7 to the hard drive. I installed the upgrades one after the other, not stopping to open Studio until the last upgrade was installed.
- Then I could open Studio but it still froze on capture like before.
- Then I searched the Pinnacle web site for updated drivers for the 700-USB media converter. I located the most recent driver and downloaded it and installed it (in Safe mode).
- After rebooting my system the computer recognized the 700-USB and was able to import analog video via VCR.
She's a humdinger, and a keeper! And I love her for reasons that go far beyond computing

Thanks for the welcome. Cheryl gave me a DVD creating setup a few years ago but eventually we upgraded to Pinnacle, and are in the early stages of starting a videography business. We've finished our first project and are negotiating a couple of others. She picked it up on the assumption I might find it fun. She was right. We're looking forward, too, to our upgraded toys. We've gone from a playpen to a couple of acres. Hurrah!

We have a really amazing marriage/partnership/friendship. It gets better as the years go by; can't ask for much more! Bill
