    S14UC Issue: AVCHD Editing

I've found a problem when viewing AVCHD files in the edit window. The films break up with quite a bit of pixelation, but if the same film is played in Studio 12 the film plays fine.

I have not as yet had a chance to test building and creating an AVCHD project in S14UC to see if the final rendered film suffers from the same problem.

I understood (from the forum) that the AVCHD codec had been improved for S14.

Currently any editing of AVCHD, which is all my films these days, will have to be carried out in S12 until this is corrected.

Can you supply a very short sample of what your video so we can try to repro that here?

    Re: S14UC Issue: AVCHD Editing

Attached is a link to a short clip (45mb) of seagulls as recorded in avchd. As the seagulls fly off the pixelation (in studio 14) occurs along the railings and water areas. It does not occur in studio 12 that also resides on the same pc.

I've had to cut the original clip down to 20 secs through an S14 project and then "make movie". If I view this new clip in S14 the pixelation is even worse. The interesting thing is that windows media player plays it ok!? I guess that does point the problem to the codec you are using in studio 14?

Rename the file using the file extension ".m2ts". Had to change it to zip as your upload facility doesn't recognise this file extension.

    Hope this helps?

Let me give this a shot. Please bear with us as we test this.

    Hi,

Sorry for the delay in response. I have tried to download your attached file but it kept timing out. Maybe you can upload it to a file host such as mediafire?

    Regards,
    Marc P.

Sorry to be a pain. But the error "This file is currently set to private." comes up when trying your mediafire links. Sad

    Re: S14UC Issue: AVCHD Editing

I viewed the initial source file (changing the file suffix from ZIP to MTS) using the VLC player on a core 2 duo.  The flying seagulls look pixelated or jaggy prior to any editing at all.  Perhaps others can test, using different PC specs or players.

What bitrate, frame rate, or pixel dimensions did you use when "shooting" the birds?  Interlaced or progressive?

If you persuade the birds to return for another "take," test whether you get any better results with your videocam's HQ setting.  Also try using lower pixel dimensions, but with higher settings for bitrate and framerate.  For instance, the 1280x720 60p mode of the Lumix GH1 is better for fast action than the supposedly HQ 1920x1080 24p setting.  Bread crumbs will also help, but gulls can sometimes be lured by other means.

Sorry Marc should be okay now.

    Re: S14UC Issue: AVCHD Editing

If you use windows media player the seagulls look jagged, its down to the codec selected.

The footage was shot at 17mbps at 1920x1080i on a Panasonic HDC-HS300

I think you've missed the point though JKoch, all my HD clips play fine and edit fine in S12, they just don't in S14.. therefore it is something in S14 that is causing the problem.

As suggested by others I tried editing and making a movie but this just makes things worse.

    Re: S14UC Issue: AVCHD Editing

Might be of help Marc, I have just clean installed windows 7 (64bit) and after installing anti virus software loaded S14UC to test the pixelation problem.

Tested the same piece of video and it still pixelates I'm afraid.

    Re: S14UC Issue: AVCHD Editing

I'm sorry for a long time to get this working. We had some problems with new AVCHD lab machines. Had to repartition and reformat over the weekend. I've downloaded the file and I'll update after I attempt to repro the issue.

    Re: S14UC Issue: AVCHD Editing

I see what you mean. The pixels show on Studio's preview. What puzzles me is that on the new machines that were freshly formatted has nothing but Studio 12 and 14, but the fuzziness is worse in 12 than in 14 on these machines. They act similarly in Windows XP, Vista and 7. All are freshly formatted PCs. I've tested another M2TS file also in 1920x1080 25p but it does not show the same fuzziness on both in and out of Studio. Hmm..  Let me report this and look around. Thanks again for the sample video.

By the way, what camera did you use to shoot this?

    Re: S14UC Issue: AVCHD Editing

Glad that you were able to reproduce the problem.

The camera the footage was taken on was a Panasonic HDC-HS300 at maximum resolution (17mbps).

All the footage taken on that camcorder plays fine in my version of Studio 12 under Vista 64bit.

I have footage taken on a different HD camcorder (Sony HDR-HR7E) which is not full HD in resolution (1440x1080) shows less pixelation than the panasonic.

Hope the issue can be resolved soon as it does render S14 useless to me :-(

    Re: S14UC Issue: AVCHD Editing

Thanks for the additional information.  I'll relay this to QA and see what we can find about it. What is a mystery to me is that, S12 on my end shows more pixelation than 14. Confused

    Re: S14UC Issue: AVCHD Editing

That is strange because here all HD footage plays fine in S12.

Tell me about it. Did you install any codec packs previously, prior to installing Studio 14?

    Re: S14UC Issue: AVCHD Editing

Vista 64 setup has loads of codecs installed on it - i installed a codec pack many months ago

Windows 7 only has those codecs installed by the clean install process

    Both pixelate the avchd footage

    Hope that helps?

You have a point. Vista and Win 7 has tons of codecs. Thanks for pointing that out.
