If one opens the Windows Task Manager, and ends operation of any non-essential functions, would that do the same job?

Before and after use of Enditall, what difference will one see in the list of functions in operation in the various Task Manager windows?

    Re: Enditall

If you are really good, and aware of what processes are critical and which aren't, you will probably see little or no difference. However, most people aren't that aware of what's running on their machines. And even if they do know how to open the Task Manager, they wouldn't know exactly what to look for.

The nice thing about enditall is it won't shut down critical processes. Also it does it automatically, except that you do have to select both the close and kill buttons.

    Re: Enditall

Is anyone running Enditall with Vista 32? I installed it but was not sure of the interface, then uninstalled.

The issue is reducing CPU useage while editing.

I've tried msconfig/disable everything, but it doesn't have much effect. And it doesn;t shut down Internet connection or antivirus program.

When I'm viewing a SD project on the Timeline, the average CPU usage is 15 percent with spikes to 30.

For HDV (.m2v), it;s 50 percent average usage with spikes to 98 percent. (much less without full-screen resolution)

How "bad" is that? Can I expect much improvement?

I used to use "Enditall" with Xp (SP3) without problems.  That is until I bought a wireless mouse and keyboard.  Enditall turned off the wireless program and I had no more keyboard functionality.

I have noticed that the most problems were caused by Internet access from various programs such as anti-virus, e-mail checking, automatic updates, etc.  Nowadays I simply turn off network access in the editing computer and disable the automatic updating function.  I also turn off all unnecessary running programs in Task Manager.  I don't need to use Enditall with this work flow anymore.

I use a Logitech track ball wireless mouse on XP 3 and have had no problems so far.

As I said, I have both the Logitech wireless mouse and keyboard.  With Enditall I had no problems with the wireless mouse, but it killed my keyboard access.  Turning off the network and Internet functions as well as killing unnecessary programs through Task Manager seems to be enough to eliminate any editing conflicts.  With this work flow I don't really need Enditall anymore.

    Re: Enditall

That seems simple enough and it's what I do now.

    Thanks

    Re: Enditall

What is the minimum that should be left on Task Manager to get the most out of your computer?   A lot has been suggested over time, but i don't think I have ever seen a detailed explanation of what should be left running.  Where can this sort of info be obtained?

I am sure many would benefit from this.

    Re: Enditall

As a general rule, anything that has your name for the User name can be deleted. But even there, there could be exceptions but deleting something you shouldn't isn't catastrophic if it's something you initiated.

The other stuff like System and Local Services you delete at your own risk Tongue Tied

I doubt you will find any detailed explanations anywhere. Everyone's computer is unique. We have our own combinations of software, anti-virus, malware finders, etc. So you will see different services in the Task Manager even if checked hour by hour.

I'm somewhat familiar with what my Task Manager should have running but once in a while something will show up that I'm not familiar with. Then I just google whatever it is. Nine times out of ten it show up in the list of suggested searches before I'm done entering my task Smile  Once you get an explanation, you can decide whether you want to keep the process running or not.

    Re: Enditall

Because the "processes" list can be so confusing, unless you are in the IT business, I tend to leave that alone.  I just look at the programs which show up as running in Task Manager and from that relatively clear list I select what to end and what to leave running.

    Re: Enditall

One guidline is to not end any process that doesn't have your user name in the title.

If you end a process, when does the process reappear? Upon restart?

You beat me to it.  I was about to ask how do you restart things after finishing with Studio?
