    Really frustrated with McAfee

Does anyone know how to disable McAfee so that it STAYS disabled until I reboot?  I run Enditall before starting an edit session - which kills all background processes including McAfee - but every time I glance at the system tray the damn thing is back and it interferes with my editing.  McAfee tech support was no help at all.  They gave me a procedure that shuts down all McAfee tasks except the online scanner...which appears to be the problem.  That and their automatic updates, which can run at any time of day or night.

    Just a brief initial response.

You used to be able to Exit McAfee, via Taskbar Icon. That option is no longer available. McAfee Automatic Updater will only Launch if you're conncted to the Internet.

I would have thought that a "Rule Of Thumb" would be, that you shouldn't be connected while Editing.

The only time I have Studio Open, when connected to the Internet, is when I'm replying to Forum Posts.

I  usually have approx 43 Processes, including McAfee & 1 Antispyware (3 others have been permanently prevented from launching at Startup), none of which have ever interferred with Editing, on my System.

It might be helpful if you could describe exactly what happens while you're Editing, with McAfee Running.

Maybe Right-Clicking on Taskbar / Taskmanager / Processes / Selecting McAfee Processes / End Process, might fix your prob?

    Anyone-else?

As far as automatic updates, using the advanced settings you can configure McAfee to:

    • Install the updates autimatically,
    • Download the updates automatically and notify when ready to install,
    • Notify before downloading, or
    • Disable automatic updates and check for udates manually.

My system is pretty stressed by the editor and ANYTHING else running can affect the video.  I tend to get dropped frames and other video glitches when another process starts.  I'm guessing it's a competition for available CPU cycles.

I understand the juxtaposition of the ability of a virus or worm to circumvent anti-malware programs and the need for those programs to be immune to such circumvention but I think manufacturers are forgetting about the USERS.  There are times when it simply would be advantageous to shut down anti-malware applications, as in my case.

Disconnecting from the Internet is not easy because of the location of the TCP/IP port on my computer but I will test to see if that is a viable option.  And...who knows?...it might solve the other issue of McAfee starting while I'm in the middle of an edit session, too.

    Thanks for your response, Peter.

    Re: Really frustrated with McAfee

You can disable internet connection by going to the control panel, network connection and disable access there. If you can't find the exact spot, post back. I'm short on time now or I would look it up. I have to change to administrator to access it. When you are finished editing, you can enable network access again.

I threw them out over two years ago and use the free AVAST software, it had a very good rating by CONSUMERS REPORT. Use it on 2 computers, MCAFFE wanted me to pay extra for the second computer.

Avast updates their program every few hours 24/7.

I have a Thompson Alcatel SpeedTouch USB2 MODEM, with a Desktop Shortcut. I can Connect/Disconnect to the Internet, via the Shortcut.
MCAFFE wanted me to pay extra for the second computer.
I have McAfee Total Protection 3PC User - No extra charge. Daily Updates.

    Re: Really frustrated with McAfee

I found an easier way of disconnecting from the 'net (should have thought if it before) by unplugging from the wireless router.  However, it still doesn't help...McAfee starts spontaneously and the trouble begins.  I'm going to investigate AVAST.  Thanks.

COLOUR, you might want to point out that a 3PC license costs more than a 1PC license. Mcaffe had no limit untill a few years ago.To pay extra

might seem fair but I can only use 1 PC at a time. One is a laptop the other a desktop.

You don't have to physically disconnect your network cable. I always "disconnect" from the internet before rendering in Studio. It's quick and easy once you setup XP correctly:

    1. Show all your network connections.
    2. On the network one, select Properties and check Show icon in notification area when connected.
    3. Click OK.
    4. This will cause a network icon to appear on your task bar to the right. When you want to "disconnect" from the internet, right-click on it and select Disable.

To create a quick method to "reconnect":

    1. Show all your network connections.
    2. On the network one, right-click and select Create Shortcut.
    3. Use this shortcut icon when you want to reconnect.
