    video artifact

    Attachment: artifact0000.JPG

    Hi All

Can anyone tell me what causes the artifcat in the attached picture ?

This is a blow up of a DV frame - but it apears in the original as well

the image is static (so it's not interlacing)

Not that it is very strong on some of the edges (mostly hoizontal) and does not occur on the vertical edge at all

It is not consistent at all, even in the same image on parts of the image it shows up and on others it doesn't

and the big question ... what can I do to eliminate it

    Thanks

    Re: video artifact

Did this image come from a DV camera, or was it converted to DV from something else (e.g. HDV)?

    Re: video artifact

This is a normal behavior with DV. It will appear on diagonals.

"This is a blow up of a DV frame -"

May I ask where and how you got the frame?  Sylvain is correct about DV frames but it makes a difference where you got your blowup.  If this is taken from the preview or source window in Liquid it is not a full quality picture.  The distortion you see will probably not be visible in a finished disc.

    Re: video artifact

    It's from DV

I magnified it with the 2d editor, then exported it as a jpeg, and clipped out a bit in the middle

Why would it dissapear ? I certainly see it when I create the mpeg

Why don't I see these problems (including interface artifacts) on commercial films (assuming they are video and not film)

...is it because they use more expensive cameras, formats, post processing ?

    Re: video artifact

On commercials, they'll use film cameras, HD cameras, DVCPro50, Digital Betacam, etc, most of the time.

Just shoot in DVCPro50 and you'll see a difference. Same thing with a downscaled HD footage. A HD footage has much more lines of resolution.

And when exporting a still frame from Liquid, you'll not get the same result if you use "Top Field First" or "Progressive". Try both and you'll see.

Also, where you filming in 60i or 30p with a progressive camera like a DVX100?

    Re: video artifact

"magnified it with the 2d editor"

That will lower the quality of the frame.  The more you magnify, the fuzzier the picture gets.
