Capture Suddenly Goes to Drive Folder Only - Does Not Appear in Sequence Rack of Project - Unable to Import Clip - M2V,WAV Incompatible

First time in 5 years with this sudden problem.  I successfully capture HDV Native Transfer M2V via firewire with the logging tool, I close it out but it does not populate the Sequence Rack in my project.  Instead, it only shows up in the Media Tab and is playable locally there.  I cannot import the file via Import Media Clip in a project rack - Error: "File can not be imported.  Format or compression is not supported.  00004603D 00005318D  VO.M2V"  I've tried switching capture to another hard drive with still no success.

    Properties Window of similar failure:

Just discovered the problem is program-wide.  I now cannot import clips of any type that were successfully imported before.  No change with new sequence as a test.

I opened a new project and there is no problem capturing or importing into it.  I'm beginning to assume the huge project I've been working on has somehow become corrupted related to import and capture.  I cannot drag any of the project's clips onto the timeline.  Luckily I fused all the segments so they should import okay into the new project.

Okay.  I can see I'm in new territory with this one.  I've been building this project on an external, interchangeable 1Tb drive (write and render).  Recently, while attempting to log/capture additional HD tape, an error popped up "Delayed write, etc." on the external drive.  I shut down, rebooted, relaunched and now cannot import or export from the project.  I can start a new project on that same drive with no difficulty and can capture from the camera-no problem.  I still cannot import files from the original project on the same drive - "not supported" message again.  I AM able to cut and paste from the old timeline to the new timeline.

Somehow, the files in the original project are incapable of being exported and no clips can be dragged from the rack to the timeline anymore.  I don't know if anyone else has experienced this and I hope no one does.  Definitely a point to be made for regular backups.

Delayed write errors are bad things. In this case, your project file was open and was in the process of being written to, when the write failed to complete (giving you the error). Your project file is now corrupted.

Your media files appear to be OK, so you will probably be able to salvage most if not all of your old project. You can use the project browser and/or project dialog (the big project window) to copy sequences and media over. You don't need to re-import anything as it's already in Liquid's media managed directories.

Do you know how to use the project dialog, and are you familiar with accessing racks in other projects from the project browser?

Re: Capture Suddenly Goes to Drive Folder Only - Does Not Appear in Sequence Rack of Project - Unable to Import Clip - M2V,WAV Incompatible

Thank you, Dave.  What I did is selected, on the corrupt project timeline, all video and audio clips on all 15 tracks, copied, then pasted to the 15 new tracks in my new recovery project.  The 2 1/2 hour new project is now rendering.  I haven't explored the procedures noted in your last sentence but will explore.

I think the external drive (in a probably-less-than-efficient case) overheated and stopped functioning.  The drive was really hot.  I have placed a small fan next to the open case, directing a breeze onto the drive...seems to be keeping it cool.  Los Angeles San Fernando Valley is a little toasty today and I was saving the air conditioning until now.  Meantime, after the pasted lines render, I'll fuse segments to another hard drive for safety.  I had already done that with one version of the whole video, now I'm doing the same with version two (it's a high school musical - different actors - different nights - three cameras - editing nightmare but fun).

    Thanks, again, for your response!

Glad to see you were able to recover your stuff. I just finished a musical myself; 2 different lead actors on different nights, with different costumes, 1 SD camera and 1 HD camera from which I reframed from wide and medium shots to medium and close-up shots; effectively giving me 3 cameras). A nightmare edit because of lighting and sound problems. I really (REALLY) need to get them to schedule a full-dress rehearsal as a video shoot (it would be so nice to be able to call "CUT" and reshoot a bad shot).

I know what you mean.  This school presented 5 shows of Wizard of OZ Thursday thru Sunday (2 shows Saturday).  We video'd 4 of them.  My two versions are coming from Fri nite and Sat nite with cover shots dropped in from the other shows if needed.  Dorothy was played by identical twins (interesting editing possibilities).  Used 2 Canon XH-A1s on the sides (1 Rode mic into the left and another into the right) and Canon HV30 in back (connected to their sound board mono output for principal actors' wireless mic input), used the school's music cue cd to sweeten the music track in stereo.  Fun hobby.
