What I need to know about HD

I'm filming in HD quality, over 1 year now. I burn my DVD's directly in Liquid in a splendid quality. However, not in HD.

The "problem" is that I don't have a HD TV set. And before buying one in the near future, I would like to have some valuable opinions from you. I'm living in PAL.

    My questions are:

    • Is Full HD better than HD Ready? I guess, yes. But what would be the difference? More pixels or lines? Keep it simple for me.
    • Some TV sets also offer 100 Hz. My current JVC flatscreen (big model) has 100 Hz and is for digital TV very good. So I guess that 110 HZ in combinarion with Full HD would be the best quality. Or an I talking nonsense?
    • It seems that one needs a very large HD screen nowadays. That's commercial talk of course. When I watch my TV, it will be from a distance of about 3-4 meters. Should this be taken into account when looking for HD Ready/Full, 100 Hz and size of the screen?
    • Making HD DVD's is at the moment only through Blu-Ray. Is this true? If so, than I need a Blu-Ray burner in my PC and a Blu-Ray player for the new TV-Set. Suggestions?

Re: What I need to know about HD

    Hi Sef,

By way of background info, I am not a highly-technical person but like you, I live in Pal-land and also edit in HD.

HD-ready means that the TV can display HD programs from BBC or Sky but to view these requires an extra receiver (I speak for UK). I use a Sky receiver that cost an extra £10 per month and the quality is stunning for sport such as golf, tennis or football. I have a 42" 1080i plasma TV but later models use 1080p which is even better. Whether you choose LCD or plasma for your new TV is entirely your choice.

However, by using HDMI-out from your camera to HDMI-in to your TV, you can display in HD. Presumably you can capture the finished timeline to tape on your camera, therefore you can view your HD creation in HD onto your new TV without having a blu-ray writer. Having said that, a blu-ray writer on your PC is fairly inexpensive (I have an LG burner HL-DT-ST BD-RE GGWH20L). A blu-ray player connected to your new HD TV is also fairly inexpensive. I have a Sony BDP-S350 which works well.

You are right that Liquid edits in HD but it cannot produce a blu-ray DVD. Originally, I opted to buy Pinnacle Studio 12 Ultimate for blu-ray capture but I have never used it. I was having difficulty in getting Liquid to produce a DVD using animated picons (SD) that worked in all DVD players so I bought DVDit Pro HD which can produce SD DVD as well as blu-ray DVD.

Hope this helps and presumably you are now back to full fitness. If I can give you any other info, PM me.

Of course, you can also create HD content via WM,or Quicktime. Most video cards have DVI output that can be adapted to HDMI to play on an HDTV.

Most TVs 40" and larger are native 1020p today, only the least expensive are not.

An "HD ready" tv can display at higher resolutions than (in PAL land) 720 * 576. However this is very variable and wide-ranging. A "full HD" tv displays at 1920*1080(i/p depending on model). You may also want to consider the refresh rate: 100hz screens are available. Hope that is useful.

Of course, but you might pay for the trip yourself, you´re always welcome to visit and the flights are cheap between Bruxelles and Stockholm, I live 40 minutes from the airport.

Re: What I need to know about HD

Schiphol Amsterdam is very close for me. 30 KM.

But I still don't have the answers I'm looking for.

    Size?

    Full/Ready HD?

100Hz Yes/No? What is the benefit when having already 1080p?

    And so on...

Re: What I need to know about HD

The 100hz tvs means there is less flicker. There are even some sony bravia models with 200hz refresh rates see:http://www.sony.co.uk/product/t32-z-series/kdl-40z4500 apparently the benefit is when watching images with lots of motion, e.g. live sporting events. There are probably other brands offering similar specs. I saw this one in a sony centre and the picture is very good. However, the TV is really expensive. One way to choose is to find a specialist retailer offering more than one brand with a viewing studio and compare images from your own dvd/bluray but keeping the player and other variables the same. Specs mean nothing as everyone has different preferences. I like pin sharp images. Some are happier with a softer image.

Re: What I need to know about HD

It might a good idea to play a HD clip from my camera through the HDMI cable (in the store). That could give me a good clue fo what I like.

Just thought about the flight costs Sef, as the EG parlament is situated in Bruxelles, a lot of cheap flights to Stockholm.

Anyway, no need to invent the wheel once more, my own setup

    Computer      Movie      Automobile

and, as said, you are most welcome, just Pm me

Sef, I hope that your healt is getting better and better for each day, I also know that you are thinking bluray the day that you can afford it and that you think that dvdit pro hd is to expensive.

John ( as in TV John ) gave me a tip a couple of weeks ago about a new app from TMPgen that he thought worked well for bd, I have just tried it, worked like a charm with bd popup menus and all that, cost was 80 dollars, you might take a look.
