Accidently changed folder to film strip folder - help!

Lets see if I can re-create a thread for Alan: And hopefully he will be pointed to this thread because his original is somehow locked up. Embarrassed

**ADDED** The original thread has been fixed now, it's located HERE

    Alan B:
I messed up and when Studio 10 asked me to name a folder for the project I was doing I used an existing file folder name and ..... poof!... it became a film strip folder that I can't access.  Windows Explorer shows a house with a "can't open" circle around it, although there is over 5 megs of video in it.  I can't rename it or see the files in it and Studio doesn't show the film is there to add to the timeline.  What can I do?  There is video there for editing.

    towbar:
If you are using explorer and try to open the filmstrip folder, you won't be sucessful. It's a protected folder that only the same named .stx file can open.

Try opening your project from within the Studio program, File / Open Project.

Just so you know, the filmstrip folder doesn't hold any video in there, it only holds information that tells the Studio program where the information is held.

    Alan B:
When Studio asked me to name my new project and brought up the Explorer window with other project names in it, I took the folder that had the video in it and used that name (Christmas 2006).  Then the icon changed to a film strip icon, I had a project open named Christmas 2006.stx, but the folder, which is now a film strip folder, doesn't show any video to add to the timeline.  All I see in it is folders called "Obj", "Settings" and "Workgroup"

In Explorer I am able to click on the film strip icon and right click to properties, where it tells me there is over 5 MB of data in there.  I know my video is there. That is why I am stuck.

There must be some way to get this video out and use it in my Christmas 2006.stx project.

When you are in Explorer at this exact spot, do you see a .stx filenamed Christmas 2006?  That is the proper file that you need to use to open the project.

Think of the .stx file as a key to your project. And the filmstrip (grey) folder is like a vault. The key just allows you to access the data that is held in that vault. If you notice that the file size for the key is zero, then that might be confusing you. That key will never hold any data because it's only a key. But if you use that key and open the vault, you project should open.

    towbar:

Did you try this approach from the Studio program? And did you even see the .stx file that has your project name ?

Hopefully Colour will pop in to help here, he's the locksmith in the house. Wink

    colour:
     I'm guessing here:

Then the icon changed to a film strip icon,

Then previously, the Project "Containing" Folder was a Windows Yellow Folder, "containing" the following Windows Yellow "Sub" Folders, which you can see:

All I see in it is folders called "Obj", "Settings" and "Workgroup"

    .

Outside of Studio, go to: Start / My Documents / Pinnacle Studio / My Projects.

What you should have showing, is a Studio generated Grey "Film-Strip" Project Folder Named CHRISTMAS 2006 & a christmas.stx File, that Opens your Project into the Timeline.

As already Posted by Towbar, you can't Open the Grey Folder, to prevent you from tampering with it.

For unknown reasons, the Grey Folder (which can't be Opened, apart rom a Registry Hack) turns into a Windows Yellow Folder (Which can be Opened). When this happens, the Files in the Sub Folders have usually been corrupted & you have to re-do your Project.

However, if you have an empty  CHRISTMAS 2006 Yellow Folder with the 3 yellow Sub Folders showing separately, Copy (Not move) those to the Empty Folder. If the Yellow Folder already contains the Sub Folders, try Opening it with the christmas.stx File. Likewise if you have the CHRISTMAS Grey Folder.

If you haven't got a christmas.stx File, you can create a new one. I'll Post a  Link re; how to in my Post here.

We also need to have a Screen Shot of what you have showing in your "My Projects" Folder, before a decision can be made whether or not your Project can be recovered. I'll Post instructions re; how to, in this Post.

In Explorer I am able to click on the film strip icon and right click to properties, where it tells me there is over 5 MB of data in there.  I know my video is there.

The Project Folder doesn't contain any Source Files, which remain "As is", in their relevant Locations. It contains information re: those & your last Edit. The number of Files exceed the number of Files you have in your Timeline. 5MB looks too small to me for your Project to be complete.

All of the above may seem garbled, but the only people who can provide a logical explanation & fix are Pinnacle, whov'e resolutely ignored the problem for approx 4 years, despite many requests to do soAngry
