I just upgraded to a faster computer, and reinstalled Studio 12 on the new system. Works fine, except that none of my .wmv files that I had produced on the older computer (with the exact same version 12.1 of Studio) will play on the new computer. (My external HD with all of the projects and videos is now attached to the new computer).

The same files play just fine in MS Media Player and VLC.

If I output (create movie) from Studio 12.1 in .wmv format, those files will not play either [.avi, mpeg4, flv - all work fine]. Is there a .wmv driver for Studio that may have become corrupted? Pinnacle Support has not been very helpful.

Anybody seen this phenomenon before?

Sorry but I got a bit confused. You mentioned that you have a new computer and it has Studio 12, you have placed all your Studio project and rendered WMVs to an external drive, but it does not play it except in WMP and VLC, But where does it not play?

Studio 12.1 on the new computer works fine... except that it will not load or play .wmv files - they show up as a black window with a blue question mark. These .wmv files will play using Media Player or VLC on the same computer, so I am pretty sure the files are not corrupted.

The very same files played without a problem in Studio 12.1 on my old computer.

I'm having the same problem. I am trying to produce a video using converted files from .mov to .wmv since pinnacle cannot use .mov files. The converted wmv video clips play fine in every other program so I know the files are not corrupted, but are not editable within my pinnacle studio 12, They won't even play!

 I'm starting to get that hurt feeling in my stomach that I made a bad purchase....

To both Posters:

Insert S12 Prog Disk / Choose Install & then choose "Repair", in following Pop-Up.

If that doesn't fix it. Removing S12.1 Patch might. But you would have to Reinstall just S12, to do that.(Doing a "Repair" in previous Versions, removed the latest Patch & you would have to apply it again. Apparently not with S12 though. You are still left with S12.1). Confusing? - Thought so. But that's Studio for you  

To the Original Poster - It's inadvisable to have Studio generated Projects on an external HDD .Experience has shown that  the majority of Lost Project cases, have been due to having these on an External HDD & not in Studio's Default Location.

Anyone-else?

 

Thanks for the pointer to the Repair option. I will definitely give it a try. (Reinstalling 12 is definitely my last option as I've been on the upgrade path, and reinstalling 12 for me means starting with a full install of V10, and then using my upgrade disk to install 12. It's a very lengthy process - I know because I've now done it twice).

Did you know that you can install an upgrade version of S12 without 10 installed? S12 will prompt you to put in the s10 disc and seriqal as proof of ownership.
