    Windows 7 public beta released

Microsoft has released a free public beta version of the upcoming Windows 7. Based on early testing it seems that performance-wise the new OS is wiping floor with Vista.

If any Liquid user dares to test how Liquid flows on Win 7, I'd definately like to hear some experiences

The only miss is the windows classic start menu.

Otherwise many will be surprised by its performance.

It's seems like a strongest Vista OS and a bit faster.

Thanks for your interest in the Windows 7 Beta. The volume has been phenomenal—we're in the process of adding more servers to handle the demand. We're sorry for the delay and we'll re-post the Beta as soon as we can ensure a quality download experience.

Not looking good, is it? Wink

    Jeff,

I wonder if this is an indication that people are desperately looking for an alternative to Vista and its bloated installation size?

I'm not sure I would use the term "desperate". For most people, an OS should be no more exciting than what gas they are filling their car with. A means to an end. If you want a flashy GUI, buy a Mac. For those of us that remove the eye candy, XP works fine now. If Win7 makes better use of my hardware, I'm in.

Re: Windows 7 public beta released

I agree with both those points. The problem is that XP works fine "for now". Like many people I fully intend to skip Vista entirely, but eventually - and lets hope it's a a very long way off - I will be forced to upgrade. That's why my interest was aroused, so I'm keen to have a look.

I would have though Microsoft might have anticipated demand. I polled the Windows 7 site regularly, so I don't think the beta could have been available for more than an hour.....

Well, It works. Nice Fish. It's taken me 30 minutes to get my network connection sorted out, so I don't hold out much hope for anything else.

It was the only Windows (beta) I didn't need not one single driver.

Even for Realtek wireless for my Advent.

The shutdown times were incredible at this tiny PC.

bigrock, George's announcement above is earth shattering!

Although I have been on the forum all along (except for the past four hours), things seem to be changing rapidly:  George (sverkalo) not a Liquid user anymore?  Jeff (jjn) running Studio 12 on Windows 7?  George doing extensive research on using MC 3 and not criticizing it too much?  What else can happen in a such a short time?

And here I am happily editing in Liquid 7.2.1 on Win XP while waiting for NextGen, blissfully ignorant of the world turning around me.  Did I miss NextGen also?

No, the question is whether nextgen will miss the Liquid user...

Re: Windows 7 public beta released

Will do a try with my sys this week, both with Liquid and MC, I have an empty bootdisc.

Meanwhile, Liquid works as well as Mc on my V 64 sys and I have no plans at all to put Liquid in a drawer, Liquid just saved my ass ( once again )

I got a customer tape with 32 khz audio and about 20 broken timecodes, MC didn´t like that tape at all, not even with the capturing functions that are said to be used for these kind of tapes, whilst Liquid´s EZ capture function worked excellent.

Very nice indeed to have lots of tools in your box, makes it able to do lots of difficult things ...

Re: Windows 7 public beta released

So far, this 64 bit distro seems good.  No actual measurements but it is very responsive.  But that is in comparison to an XP system with gobs of software installed.  IE8 seems as responsive as Firefox 3.  It has some very nice new features like Library (list of commonly used sites).

Tomorrow, install the editing software.  Todate, it gags at BlufTitler not being happy about DX11.  Most other 'normal' utilities seem to work.

I just finished installing 32bit windows 7 on a p4 478 2.4ghz system with 512megs. So far it is pretty responsive. I am going to try to install liquid on it shorty.

Re: Windows 7 public beta released

Well I have installed Liquid 7.2 with the DX10 patch on to my play setup, simple Pentium 4 2.4ghz with 512meg DDR and an ati 9600 video card.

I import some HDV footage from my HV20, did a quick edit and let it render. I then exported it to dvd as well. It appears to be working.

I noted this, Windows 7 Beta 7000 32bit comes preinstalled with IE 8, DX11 and come with ATI Drivers 8.14

I was relatively suprised as to how responsive this simple system is. Anyhow thats all I have for now. The Liquid Setup went smooth but it requires a user to be present as everytime it finishes one install it asks if you trust the next mini install. Other than that no problems.

Windows 7 beta 64 is the Ultimate version.

So far, most utils and the editing is working like Tomas indicated in his Vista installation.  It loads 7.2 in just a couple of seconds.  The overall operation is very responsive, but the system in not very loaded with software.

It looks like it failed to load BOB (as expected) but also failed to load codecs.  But it is early.  Very promising.  If this is a beta, I am very hopeful for the completed version.

The "The overall operation is very responsive, but the system in not very loaded with software.". That just might be the Achilles heel.Hmm

All you guys are doing such a great job with testing this that I think that I will lean back for a while and just observe your findings until the os will be a little more developed, no need to hurry for me, I did my findings with Vista.

Re: Windows 7 public beta released

Good news and bad news . . .

Either I did something or botched something, but I lost the DVD drives (2) from the system.  Worked at the BiOS level.  The normal drivers had been replaced with Pinnacle drivers (certainly not 64 bit).  Normal driver is CDROM.SYS but something else from Pinnacle had replaced it.  That was after I had installed lots of stuff including 7.2.  Uninstalling everything did not fix the problem.  That's when I found that the Backup/Restore had not properly worked (no disk space allocation).

Curious point:  the Win7 boot disk has lots of good options and a menu driven setup menu.  Nice improvement.  You can rewrite the MBR, format, partition, etc. from the menu.  However, XP had the ability to reinstall the OS (not a fresh install).  With W7 however, you can do it but only when the OS is working.  Of course the DVD drives weren't working so I couldn't access the install disk.  So a reformat and a fresh install.  No big deal.  Install takes about 1/2 hour.  Faster than XP.

So now, a new OS W7, backup activated and backup points as I go along installing utils and configuration.  No ALE7.2 yet.  I think it may be the culprit.  Reinstall editing soon after keeping tabs on the DVD drives.

BTW, I'm using a multiple boot configuration and there is a nice boot menu to select from.  The way it works, the partition I installed W7 was called F: (C: being the original XP).  On booting W7, XP is disabled and the W7 partition is now called C:.  When selecting the XP partition, XP parition is switched back to C: an the Win7 partition is back to drive F:

Re: Windows 7 public beta released

Good to hear some early experiences about Win7, keep 'em coming.

I think I'll stick with my westerly neighbour's (Tomas) solution and try the beta OS later when I have enough time to delve it better. But it sure looks promising.
