Quality loss when starting from VOB files?

A friend videotaped an event for me using his DV-Cam.  I asked him to dump it to a DVD so I could edit it.  I was expecting an MP3 or WMV file.  When I loaded the DVD, it was apparently TV-ready as it contained .VOB files.  I was able to capture it into Studio 12, but was wondering if I lost any quality here?  Should I ask him for the original tape(s) and capture it directly into Studio?

    Thanks

He has added an extra encode to mpeg-2, so unless you are just doing simple cut editing, not changing the bitrate and burning back to Video DVD, you will add more recoding than you need. I'd get him to send you the tapes Smile
