    Ideas for telecined work flows

I am just trying to figure out some workflows for telecined footage (shot and also to be completed in the future)

Would it be possible to get a high grade scan of the negative, as mentioned something like to 2k 10bit, and then get proxy files to edit on Avid Liquid and taking those files back to the post house to have a master dubbed on digi beta for festivals?

1)Telecine and grade footage at best resolution

2)Get low res version on DV to edit on Avid Liquid

3)Take offline edit to post house and get master to digi beta from best transfer

Is this a common workflow? Quite costly?

I am just trying to iron things out, because I cant afford to start making a system to handle uncompressed footage at those resolutions.

Any thoughts/opinions/feelings are much appreciated and thanks in adv,

Liquid supports creation of EDLs, but you have to bear in mind that EDLs are very limited in the kind of information they contain, and there are several different formats (so you need to contact the post house to see what they can accept). If you limit your edits to cuts and dissolves, you can get a good EDL. However, a major problem with Liquid is that if you import DV then the timecode isn't the original timecode but one assigned by Liquid. So you will have to write up something to re-write the timecode in the EDL to match the original timecode.

Obviously all other edits, color correction, etc. will have to be done with the digi beta using something other than Liquid. This is the kind of workflow that's more common in the Avid MC/Nitris/DS workflow rather than Liquid's.

When creating an EDL -  can that actually be the final cut that you want to be cut to your master? I ask because, the cost of going to a post house with another editor to finalise things, would simply blow my budget.

Also, to get around the TC issue, what about having it burnt in, on the proxy version?

That depends on the master. If you need to add fancy effects or do color correction, or even adding overlays then you'll need to finish the edit directly on the master.

Burning the timecode won't help as it's the EDL itself that needs to be edited. For example, if the source DV starts at 01:00:00.00 and Liquid imports it as 00:00:00.00, then all TC references in the EDL will be 1 hour off.

So would you suggest using a program such as Media composer or even Xpress Pro for such a task?

Would not the colour correction be made at the initial grading of the footage?

Would say a program such as Xpress, allow for the TC to be brought in without another adjustment to the time?

Thanks. As you can see I am starting out :)

"If you need to add fancy effects or do color correction, or even adding overlays then you'll need to finish the edit directly on the master."

There will be none of the above thankfully, everything will be done in camera, in terms of titles. Its an animation shot on a Bolex so, the "fx," are in camera.

Also, If I were to use a program like MC, would it be a file (quicktime?) that I would end up sending to the post house?

    so many questions............(!)
