I recorded some TV last night in which the file it made had ".avi"
 as the extension. I go to open it up in Studio and it says it cannot be played. What is going on here? Why would it record something in a format that could not be opened? This is really frustrating because I had some other recordings saved and it sems like somehow they were changed and they too cannot be opened anymore, they all have this ".avi" extension. Please tell me how I can open my recording. Under recorded shows in PCTV it shows it was recorded fine, but it too cannot open it to play. Very frustrating!

.avi is a very common video file format.  Windows media player should be able to play it, and many (most) other players as well.  The question of why your format changed I can't answer - but finding a player for .avi should be easy.  Try opening windows media player or Quicktime and going to "file", "open" and point to that file.  Should play unless there are other problems.

AVI is just a container and says nothing about which codec is used.

.avi is a very common file formate. Almost all player support it. If you face a problem you can try Video Lan Codac(VLC) player, it certainly works.
