    Digial Stills

Has anyone else had a problem with the stills button?  When I push mine on v12, it instantly crashes.  I need to get a photo montage done asap and would appreciate any support.  Thanks.  Matt

Are you referring to the Montage Button (3rd from top) in S12 Edit Album? Sometimes, when selecting a button, Studio Hangs, either Re-Booting or doing a "Repair" Install (Insert S12 Prog Disk & choose "Repair"),  fixes it.

    Anyone-else?

    Re: Digial Stills

No - its the camera shaped button.  Hover over it and it says, "Show photos and frame grabs."  Push it and it instantly shuts down the program (after saying something to the effect, "Program has stopped working.  Windows is looking for a solution and will let you know when it is found.")  I have used this same button for years to make photo slide shows in various versions of Studio.  I just upgraded to v12 and now this.  I also upgraded to the latest beta build with no change.  I can't believe I am the only one having this problem - you should all try it right now and see if yours works...

    Re: Digial Stills

I suspect that the program is trying to find my photographs in some file I might have deleted.  I don't know what it looks for in Vista, but on my XP machine (where this is not a problem) is looks into a 'My Pictures' file.  Since I hate the whole windows, My Pictures, My Music, My etc, I could very well have deleted the default folder it is expecting to find.  Can someone using 12 on Vista tell me which default folder it looks into?  Maybe I can create one so it doesn't deadend when it can't find it.  Thanks

    Re: Digial Stills

I have Studio 12 on Vista and the Show Photos button works.  I just made a quick movie inserting pictures from that pallet on Tuesday.  The button takes me to the last folder I used so I don't know what the default folder would have been at the original install.

    Re: Digial Stills

Is there no one out there with Vista that can tell me what folder it defaults to on a new install, so I can make sure I have what it is looking for?  Anyone?  What about you guys with the Pinnacle paychecks?!  Interested in making your product work?

    Re: Digial Stills

Studio Defaults to your "My Pictures" Folder,(in XP anyway). I doubt if you can Delete your "My Pictures" Folder in XP, because IMO, that would be an XP OS Folder, that can't be Deleted.

    I don't have Vista.

If your "My Pictures" Folder is called something-else in Vista, you need to find it.

In XP, you would go to: Start / Search / Pictures / Pictures & Photos / search. Then the Containg Folder would be displayed.

You need to go-up the equivalent route, in Vista.

    Try the above.

    Anyone-else?

    Re: Digial Stills

If it were me  i would try a  search for a "name" of one of the photo's in the missing folder. Once it was found i would right click and click on "open containing folder".

I guess it works the same in vista.Hmm

    Re: Digial Stills

Personally, I wouldn't be spending too much time with the lost folder theory of what's wrong.  Whenever I move a folder or even when an old project has video path-ed to a hard-drive that has changed it's drive letter, Studio puts up a dialog box that asks where the video or pictures can be found.  It doesn't sound like this is happening for you.

Does Studio immediately quit when you press the camera button, or does it go into "not responding" mode?  If it quits immediately and shuts down, you probably have to re-install.  If it simply seems to freeze and you get the "not responding" message, walk away for an hour.  Sometimes when opening a larger project, I get the "not responding" message while the project loads.  I had one in particular with a lot of transitions that seemed to take about 15 minutes to load and in the mean time, I was left wondering if it was really loading, or if the program had froze.  Usually waiting works.

    Re: Digial Stills

Not sure what your problem is, BUT for an immediate workaround, you can open the photo folder that contains the photos you wish to use in your project and drag (or copy and paste) the photos directly into the Studio timeline.

(Once you have a photo on the timeline, you can right-click it and choose Find in Album.  The album should then populate with the folder.)

    Re: Digial Stills

Good suggestion - that at least may let me do what I need to do.  I dragged a few photos on to the time line and that worked.  I hit the camera button and it in fact Vista popped up the "Studio program file has stopped working.  A problem caused the program to stop working correctly..."  All you can do at that point is to close.  To reiterate, I have not really lost a folder - I just suspect it is looking for a folder that doesn't exist.  It certainly could be something else that is causing the problem.  It is not a problem on my XP machine (there are a host of other problems with that install, but that is for another thread).

Anyone else having this problem or know how to fix it?  Pinnacle?

Oh - 'Find in Album' crashes the program just the same way.

    Re: Digial Stills

Do you have anything in the folder other than jpg files?  This problem sometimes happens when the folder contains a file type that Studio cannot handle.

    Re: Digital Stills

    Just to be clear;

Have you tried adding an image (using drag and drop) from several different folders? I ask this in case you are adding images only from one folder which for some reason Studio thinks is faulty. If this is the same folder that the camera button is trying to open it will have the same result every time.

So, have you attempted to drag and drop images from somewhere completely different and then tried to "find in album"? This will tell us if it is just the one folder or any images from any folder that cause Studio to crash.

As mentioned above, one dodgy file can cause such a crash. Don't forget to show hidden files and make sure all the jpegs really are jpegs and not some other format containing a .jpg extension. Having said that, Studio works fine for me with .bmp and .gif files (and others too).

    Re: Digital Stills

I have just checked the registry on my WinXP machine and see that there are three keys that hold paths for photos in Studio. They are found under

    HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-2052111302-2025429265-725345543-1004\Software\Pinnacle Systems\Studio 12\Preferences\\

on my system. The keys related to the image folders are called "photo custom path", "photo working path" and "photo path". The first two point to the photo album (folder) I last had open in Studio. The other one points to my "My Pictures" folder which I have set to J:\My Pictures.

If you know how to search the registry you could at least find where Studio thinks it's trying to access, by looking at these keys. If you know what you are doing, it is very simple to change the registry keys to point at a different folder. Make sure you back up the keys first and have Studio closed while you do it.
