Is there a vignette filter with transparent boundaries?

I seek a way to create an overlay whose edges are transparent and disappear into the primary layer.  The overlay cannot use chroma key or blue / green screen, but I'd like to show the central subject, yet soften or blur away the periphery.  The standard overlay controls allow one to make an entire overlay more transparent or less, but not select parts.

Which filter or effect, if any, allows one to do this?

     Thanks for any guidance.

If you have RTFX Volume 2 - try using the "Multishape PIP" filter; that has a setting to blur the edges.
