ATi video card software knocks out sound then Liquid

I've just installed a new ATi video card 512Mb PCI Express x16.  Part of the installation software is an ATi driver for HDMI sound which is installed as part of the default installation.  The initial results on the video were very favourable although I later discovered that this driver appeared to have messed up the on board sound installation.  I was able to overcome this problem by uninstalling the ATi HDMI driver though since the hardware automatically re-installed whenever the system was rebooted I had to repeat the uninstallation of the driver each time also.

I decided to try and overcome the problem by uninstalling the video card then reinstalling without this HDMI sound driver.  That went OK except that on each reboot the system now reported New Hardware.

In desperation I decided that my initial inconvenience was better than this option so uninstalled and did a default installation again.

Now Liquid 7.2 hangs when it tries to start the project that was open when I last closed the system yesterday.  I tried doing a system restore to a couple of days ago but no effect.

Is there a solution involving Liquid or is it some sort of reinstall?

If so, should I reinstall Liquid 7.2 over itself or uninstall it and then reinstall afresh?

Fundamentally I'm very annoyed that ATi should start getting into sound - why can't they just stick to graphics!

Advice from the wise here would be gratefully received.

With respect I'm not sure what conclusion I should draw from your experience.

    This is:

    a) how could an HDMI audio driver messed up Liquid?

I can't see how the one interfere with the other.

    It must be something else.

b)reinstall your on board audio driver.

c)reinstall over Liquid 7.2 if this is what you use.

Re: ATi video card software knocks out sound then Liquid

I'm afraid you have misunderstood my original message.  I related a sequence of actions.  I did not say that the HDMI driver had affected Liquid - in fact it categorically didn't, - what it affected was my sound. What appears to have messed up Liquid is the repeated uninstallation/reinstallation of the video software, though I doubt whether it is directly responsible, merely symptomatic of some other occurence.

My question concerns the operation or otherwise of Liquid and how that is best solved.  On that basis your conclusion seems to be to instal it over itself.

I got the same prob when updating my 2900 card to new CC drivers once upon a time.

Contrary to Vista, XP has no drivers for Hd Audio,  ATI has a fix for this, will do a search at the forum or load the fix on my server and publish a link.

Re: ATi video card software knocks out sound then Liquid

Thanks for the help - unfortunately I clearly have a conflict between the High Definition sound drivers by Realtek for the on board sound and the HD drivers for the ATi card.  I still don't understand why ATi has toget involved with the sound.  I guess I'll have to resign myself to uninstalling the ATi driver every reboot

For now I'm still stuck with a hung Liquid 7.2

The project that's current is very small - basically a shell installed in preparation for a recent shoot.  If I delete or move the folders Liquid is looking atfor the project  won't it boot into an empty installation?  Or must I install over?

Have you updated your drivers for your onboard soundcard from Gigabyte website ?

About your hung Liquid, fix your os first and don´t try to run Liquid with a bad os

Re: ATi video card software knocks out sound then Liquid

I'll check for updates but there is no evidence that apart from the conflict caused by the ATi driver there's anything wrong with the OS - everything else runs fine.  I'll let you know the resault of the Realtek update.

Re: ATi video card software knocks out sound then Liquid

Filip, your workflow should be,  ( should have been)

Let the Catalyst install app install all the drivers automatically, do not make any changes

Install the ATI Hd patch and update to the latest drivers for your Realtek onboard audio unit.

Check Xp device manager so that there is no exclamation marks.

If all looks well, Liquid should run well, if not, try a reinstall of Liquid 7,2 over itself, if still not, we have some probs to solve

Re: ATi video card software knocks out sound then Liquid

Thinking one more time about it; i might have installed the Hd patch before I did my Catalyst install but as you already have installed it, there shouldn´t be any probs for the Catalyst installation app to find the hd audio.

Re: ATi video card software knocks out sound then Liquid

Thanks for all your help.  Having completely failed to download any gigabyte updates I reinstalled the Realtek drivers - only to find that those are HD also and not surprisingly the ATi and Realtek HD things won't work together.  I've reverted to the annoyign and inconvenent removal of the ATi driver each time I reboot in order to get sound.

However, to Liquid.  I removed the forlder containing the roject that hung and Liquid opened vanilla.  I searched for the project i want to work on and bingo it's working again.  I haven't yet tried to revert the offending folder but may try using it at its present location.  Since it's so small I may jusy recreate it and reimport the media.

Later in the season I may uninstal all my sound drivers and see if I can't overcome the HD problem but I tend to favour letting sleeping dogs lie
