Very wierd audio problem when making DVD
Lately I have had a numbe rof problems that thanks to the people in these forums have been solved and as a result, I am asking for help again. This is a VERY wierd problem as far as I can see and I'll try to explain it. I am in the process of converting my VCR travel tapes to DVD for saving and am using Studio 11 Ultimate with Windows XP. I capture the video fine and do my editing. The picture and sound are fine in the preview window. I then go to Make Movie and have the file burned to a DVD. After completion I play the DVD both in my computer or a separate DVD player and all I get is video - no audio. Now, here's the wierd part. I took the DVD I just made and imported it back into Studio where I was going to add some audio, but lo and behold, when I play this capture the audio is there and plays fine in the preview screen. I have tried reburning this file directly to a DVD in Studio and also with Nero as well as making a AVI file and then burning, but I still get it no audio. I have installed the patch the Disk Export Patch that Pinnacle put out prior to this so that isn,t it. Also as I stated previously, these DVD's do not play the audio on either the computer of a separate DVD player. Has anyone got any suggestions as I really want to salvage these edited films. It took a long time to do and I hate to try and do it all over. Thanks for any help

Re: Very wierd audio problem when making DVD
Well, I finally figured out my problem, however I still don't know how to solve it. --I now found that if I use Power DVD to play the completed DVD, it plays fine. If I use Windows Media Player it still gives me no audio. The external DVD player I tried it on also didn't give me audio. Is there any way I can get these to play on the other players ? I think I've used the same type DVD's for all my conversions and most work fine .

Re: Very wierd audio problem when making DVD
This may be in play:
There is a bug, first reported way back in 2006 in Studio 10, and subsequently making its way into Studio 11, which has the effect that Studio will sometimes write an incorrect IFO file which specifies an incorrect audio format on a DVD. Some players (such as PowerDVD) will look at the specified audio format, and failing to find that format, will play back the "first" audio format that it finds that works. Other players (like most external players and Windows Media Player) will simply fail to play back audio in this situation. Sure sounds like it might be the cause of what you're experiencing...
There is a "discexport" patch for Studio 10.8 and Studio 11 that can be found on the Studio 11 download page which should allow you to create discs that are actually correct. BittMann (P.S. One thing that I STILL don't understand: This discexport patch is intended for Studio 11 and Studio 10.8 -- just look at the filename: "Studio_11_10.8_DiscExportPatch.exe". Why is this file not linked from the Studio 10 download area? It applies to Studio 10, it fixes Studio 10, and Studio 10 is demonstrably prone to failure when this patch is not applied--why not ensure that the customer knows that this patch is applicable to Studio 10.8?)

Re: Very wierd audio problem when making DVD
Thanks so much for the reply. I have installed the patch, however haven't made any new DVD's as yet to try it. Is there any way I can salvage the current edited disks ? The editing took a long time and I hate to have to start all over. I currently have the DVD's and wonder if I could import them back into studio and somehow get Studio to use the correct IFO file. I tried importing the file back and just reburning it, but no luck that way or by burning with Nero.

Re: Very wierd audio problem when making DVD
Just open the old project and re-create the disc...that'd be the best way (IMO). (If it were me, I'd open the old project, do a "File/Delete Auxiliary Files" to clear out any of the old workfiles that may be present, and then go to Make Movie and kick off the render) BittMann

Re: Very wierd audio problem when making DVD
I think I've already tried that. I'm glad you responded so fast as I need further advice. To test, I applied the patch and then recaptured a file from my VCR anf then went to make movie and created a new disk, but I've got the same thing. Plays in power DVD but not Windows Media player or the external player. Would it help to reinstall Studio ?

Re: Very wierd audio problem when making DVD
Just to be absolutely sure, you have applied the discexport patch to
S11, then tried to make a DVD from scratch and still have the same
issue? What are the setting for sound you use when you make a DVD? Have you tried othere settings?

Re: Very wierd audio problem when making DVD
1) You shouldn't need to recapture from your VCR, unless in the interim you'd deleted your original capture file. You should have been able to use your previously-created project file, which used your previously-captured video source, and made a new disc from there.
2) I have no idea if it'd help to reinstall Studio. Heck -- I have no idea as to how to tell if the patch was successfully applied! I do know this, though: If you had the setting "burn from previously created disc content" or however that's worded, you could've re-burned the old (incorrect) disc image instead of doing a new render. DID you do a new render? That would be one explanation... Did you do the "File/Delete Auxiliary Files" thing, just to be safe? Are you creating your disc contents and then burning, instead of burning from previous contents? (Also: If you are using DVD-RW, you could do a few test burns of a few minutes duration just to be sure you have things working correctly...once the DVD-RW thing is working correctly, you could then commit to burning a "real" DVDR. That'd be one way to keep from making so darned may "coasters".) BittMann

Re: Very wierd audio problem when making DVD
I only recaptured a test from the VCR as I no longer had kept the original captures and I wanted to see if that made a difference. As I said, the patch is installed and when I retried, I started from the edit screen again and had it rerender that whole thing. Tonight I checked all my project files and the movie files and when you click on them, there is sound when Windows Media Player is playing them. I am now trting to make an AVI file and will see if there is sound with that and if there is, hopefully I can make a DVD from that. I'll let you know as soon as it finishes rendering.

Re: Very wierd audio problem when making DVD
I finished the short trial I described in the previous message and was able to make an AVI file with sound so now I am in the process of trying to make an AVI file of the entire film and then make aDVD from that and see if it works. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Re: Very wierd audio problem when making DVD
After making a AVI file and then buring it with Nero, I was able to create a DVD with audio. I tried another longer one, however and am back to the same old thing. I can click on the file itself and it plays with audio, but when I burned the dvd - silence.

What are the setting for sound you use when you make a DVD? Have you tried a different choice?

Re: Very wierd audio problem when making DVD
So glad to hear from you today ! I just finished reinstalling Studio 11 by going into the program listing and selecting "uninstal Studio" . I didn't clean out the bonus files, etc. but when it reinstalled, I got the following message " File did not self-register or unregister - Program Files\Pinnacle\Shared Files\Filter\ PcleMPGDemux.ax - Procedure could not be found". I got this same message the last time I installed Studio and don't know if that has any bearing on my problem or what it is and if I need it. I did a search and the file is definately missing. If it's important, would it be possible to paste a copy in an e-mail and send to me ? Now, to answer your question about my sound settings, I looked under settings, make disk and the Audio Compression window says Dolby(r) Digital 2 channel. Is this what you were referring to ?

Re: Very wierd audio problem when making DVD
At a wild guess, mpeg demultiplex would be a way of spliting mpegs files into sound and video, so it might well be relevant. I do have that file, but it may be from S12, as it's in the shared folder and dated April 2008. I'll send it to you anyway
Do you have other Pinnacle software installed? Did you run regedelete before the re-install?

Re: Very wierd audio problem when making DVD
Yes, they are the sound settings I was refering to. If you use Mpa or PCm do you get the same problem? .....although the missing file is probably the thing to chase first.

Re: Very wierd audio problem when making DVD
Hemel, I haven't had a chance to really try the program out yet since installing the missing file, but just wanted to thank you so much for all your patience in trying to help me get going. (also Bittmann). I'm 81 years old and in failing health so am trying to transfer my old family tapes to DVD in order to preserve the memories for my family and it's frustrating to have Studio act up now when I probibly need it most! Later this afternoon, I'll be able to run a couple of test files through and hope things will be back to normal. I'll let you know how I make out. Thanks again.

Re: Very wierd audio problem when making DVD
Just a quick note to let you know that things finally seem to be working correctly. I had to reinstall Studio again (and added the missing file) and patch and I still seemed to be having some problem with Windows media player so I reinstalled it also and have run short tests with both Nero and Studio and got sound with both so will now work on my regular files. Thanks again for all the help.

Re: Very wierd audio problem when making DVD
Through trial and error I have found that if the DVD has no sound or won't play in WMP10 it will not work or have sound on a standalone DVD player!
That is why, I make ISO files mount them and test in NERO Showtime, WMP 10 & 11, and Power DVD. If it doesn't work correctly in all three I know I have a problem.
When all is well, I burn the ISO using (Freeware) Imgburn. then I save the ISO to ext drive in case I need to burn more! Oh, I also when finished editing, delete aux files and turn on background rendering, then I create the ISO file.
